Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

University Theatre is NC State’s volunteer student theatre. As a non-majors program, we provide the opportunity for all students at NC State to participate in theatre. We produce 4-6 productions each academic year and a three show summer Theatrefest, and instruct classes in theatre, including those in the theatre minor. We also operate two theatre facilities.

Essential Job Duties:

The position will have responsibility for one-on-one or small group acting coaching for non-majors students in productions, preparing for graduate school, or in competitive presentations, with hours as necessary and agreed upon with director. Position will work closely with production directors during rehearsals to achieve directorial goals with student actors. Position will teach as needed in non-majors academic program. Staff meeting and production meeting attendance, committee participation as necessary. Will participate in departmental planning and instructional assessment and other departmental activities. Additional opportunities may include directing a production if commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Master of Fine Arts MFA) in Theater €”Acting emphasis; equivalent degrees with experience considered. 3-7 years experience in acting coaching, acting and theatre studies instruction, and equivalent and demonstrated experience in stage acting.

Departmental Required Skills:

Must have strong communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills, commitment to excellence in performance, and teaching, commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education particularly with non-theatre-majors, ability and willingness to recruit students, and interest in becoming a full participating member of the theatre and academic community. Ability to work with university level students.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Candidates are expected to demonstrate university-level coaching, teaching and/or equivalent professional expertise, evidence of potential for excellent teaching and creative accomplishment. Experience coaching, teaching and interacting with non-theatre-majors a plus. Applicants should be creative thinkers willing to challenge norms, conversant in multiple acting techniques and have at least one Stanislavski based specialty (Michael Chekhov, Meisner, Hagen, etc.). Additional specialties may include dialects, vocal techniques and stage movement.
