Southern Connecticut State University, a comprehensive university providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate education in New Haven, Connecticut, is launching a national search for its Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). Southern seeks an experienced student life professional with a strong academic background, a passion for working with students, excellent managerial skills, and a contemporary vision for student affairs within a diverse comprehensive institution. The new VPSA will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Mary Papazian, Southern’s dynamic new president, and a dedicated and experienced staff in developing further an already strong partnership with Academic Affairs and in focusing the Division of Student Affairs on the broader goals that will emerge from the institutional strategic planning that will soon begin.
Founded in 1893 as New Haven Normal School, the university has evolved to its current-day status as a modern, diversified center of higher learning with both undergraduate and graduate programs. One of four comprehensive universities in the 17 member Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System, the cornerstones of its mission are excellence, social justice, access, and engagement. Under the leadership of its new president, the university is ready to move forward and redouble its efforts to advance its core mission.
The Division of Student Affairs offers a full range of programs and services in support of Southern’s 11,100 strikingly diverse residential, commuter, and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. It works in strong partnership with the faculty and the division of Academic Affairs. The VPSA’s broad portfolio includes residence life, student life, judicial affairs, drug and alcohol programs, the Women’s Center, the Disability Resource Center, health and wellness programs and resources, multicultural student activities, career services, counseling services, student supportive services, the Adanti Student Center, and the John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts.
The VPSA reports directly to the president, is a valued member of the University Cabinet, and is assisted by an Assistant Vice President/Dean of Students. The student affairs staff of 70 dedicated full- and part-time members are wholly committed to ensuring student success.
The ideal candidate for the position will have strong academic credentials, broad and deep experience in student affairs, the ability to further the collegial connections between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, a passion for working with students, and a desire to link the institution even more closely to its New Haven community.
