Southern Connecticut State University, a comprehensive university providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate education in New Haven, Connecticut, is launching a national search for a Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA). Southern seeks a proven advancement professional with a successful record of fundraising, campaign management and communications leadership to creatively position a young advancement program, with a growing history of achievement and a rich array of untapped assets, to achieve its ambitious goals for the future.

The search begins as Southern’s dynamic new president, Dr. Mary A. Papazian, is engaging the campus community in a strategic conversation about the university’s future and its evolving partnerships with the New Haven community, State of Connecticut and the newly established Board of Regents for Higher Education of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The VPIA is one of four senior positions being recruited to join a strong and collaborative team. This is an exciting time to join President Papazian’s leadership team and shape the future of an innovative university.

Southern is a major contributor to Connecticut’s economy. It has an impressive track record of launching excellent undergraduate and graduate programs to meet in-demand fields of study in a campus environment which emphasizes student success. It is advancing the sciences, building strong community partnerships and anticipating knowledge-based workforce needs. The university has modern new facilities and a master building plan to further its ambitious academic plans. A number of high priority projects, including a science building, a fine arts center, a campus recreation facility, phase 2 of the School of Business facilities expansion, alumni house and a building for the health and human services program, will require a public/private partnership and the initiation of a major capital campaign.

The VPIA is a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the President. The VPIA will lead a division of thirteen staff that includes: development, advancement services, alumni relations, and a foundation business office. In addition, the VPIA oversees the relationship with the Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Foundation, with the assistance of an Associate Vice President, who is charged with the responsibility of directing its daily operations with the assistance of the business office. In addition, the VPIA will assist the President in representing Southern in the New Haven community and maintain a strong working relationship with the university Office of Public Affairs.

The priority agenda for the successful VPIA candidate will be to: serve as the chief fundraiser and partner with the President and other university leaders to build culture of philanthropy; assess the advancement infrastructure and create a platform to launch and complete an ambitious capital campaign; and partner with SCSU Foundation, the Alumni Association Board, Intercollegiate Athletics, the Business Advisory Council and future councils to advance the university.

Southern is seeking an advancement professional with significant leadership and management experience of comprehensive programs and demonstrated success with campaigns and major gifts. The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge of public higher education and demonstrated success working in complex, diverse organizations. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and ten years of progressively responsible development experience within a comprehensive advancement program is required. An advanced degree and leadership experience within higher education will be highly valued.
