Emerson College, the only comprehensive college or university in America dedicated exclusively to communication and the arts in a liberal arts context, invites nominations, expressions of interest and applications for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
Located in the heart of Boston's downtown theater district, Emerson is internationally recognized for excellence in its fields of specialization: communication; marketing; communication sciences and disorders; journalism; the dramatic arts; the visual and media arts; and writing, literature and publishing. The College was established in 1880 as a school of oratory, and was located for many years in Boston's Back Bay until it made a spectacularly successful move to its current campus in the 1990s.
A distinguished faculty of scholars and practitioners, state-of-the-art technology and access to professional production and performance facilities like Emerson's new Paramount Center provide the College's 3,200 full-time undergraduate students and 900 full- and part-time graduate students with unique skills and experiences. The liberal arts curriculum within each of the College's programs promotes civic engagement, fosters respect for human diversity, and inspires students to create and communicate with clarity, integrity and conviction.
In recent years, Emerson has enjoyed a trajectory of dynamic growth and increasing visibility which has placed the College at the leading edge in preparing students for careers in communication and the arts. The foundation of new president Lee Pelton’s vision for the College—From Excellent to Extraordinary—is further raising the bar on academic excellence. The new Vice President will oversee a transformational expansion of the faculty, the development of a new campus and programs in Los Angeles and, with the president, will cultivate a leading role for Emerson in the nation’s arts and communications landscape.
As the chief academic officer of the College, the Vice President for Academic Affairs is the leader of the faculty and of Emerson’s academic programs. Emerson’s new VPAA will promote faculty collaboration, teaching, and scholarly and creative production. Emerson’s next Vice President for Academic Affairs will be a dynamic, accomplished academic leader committed to excellence in these areas.
The successful candidate will have an earned Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, with the credentials appropriate to be tenured at the rank of full professor, and should possess substantial administrative experience. A specialty in one or more areas within the liberal arts, media, communications, entertainment and arts industries is highly desirable.
The anticipated start date for the position is July 2013. For best consideration, please send all nominations and applications electronically no later than February 15, 2013 to:
