Ceramics Instructor - One Semester Temporary

State Center Community College District

Essential Functions:

The successful candidate will be expected to follow the Fresno City College Art Department curriculum, which includes teaching three sections of ceramic pottery with a mix of beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Responsible for instruction in all methods of clay construction, decoration techniques, and high and low firing procedures including reduction, oxidation, salt, raku and sagger firing. Coordinating the schedule of part-time instructors and lab assistants in all facets of glaze mixing, kiln stacking and firings; oversee the ordering of all ceramics materials and equipment; oversee the care and maintenance of the lab/classroom, clay-forming equipment, mixing of needed glazes and decorating media from a large inventory of raw materials; incorporate historical and contemporary design principles into instruction; curriculum development and revisions, including student learning outcomes; attend faculty meetings; participate in department and college activities; and otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

Include a master’s degree in fine arts, art, or art history or bachelor’s degree in any of the above and master’s degree in humanities or a valid California Community College Credential, or the equivalent education and/or experience, and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:

Include a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Art (ceramics / stoneware pottery and kilns); college-level teaching experience in Stoneware and Earthenware Pottery, and firing and glazing techniques preferred. Experience in managing a complex Art Department lab/classroom and ceramics/pottery program. Knowledge of glaze chemistry and mixing; practicing ceramicists preferred; recent exhibition record, interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals, experience working with students of various cultural background and ages; and demonstrated ability to relate to and communicate effectively with students and staff.

Conditions of Employment: 89 duty days.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary: $26,143 – $39,359 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $973 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance as well as disability coverage for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.


From the applicants who meet the basic qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. Interviewees may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration.


The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions and the teaching demonstration (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
