Job Description:

This Applications Developer will be responsible for designing, developing and supporting systems software, web-based applications, and reports for use in support of research administration and compliance.

The Applications Developer designs, develops and supports systems software, web-based applications, and reports for use in support of research administration and compliance. Duties include requirements analysis and specification development; leadership and commitment to all aspects of the software development life cycle using industry best practices in a team environment; object-oriented design and development; data analysis, database design and SQL development; software testing and quality assurance; software documentation; end-user technical support; and project management and team leadership.

The Applications Developer will be responsible for developing customized queries and web-based reports to facilitate the operations, reconciliation, management and compliance of the research enterprise. The queries and reports must be accurate, professional and timely.

The Applications Developer will assist in the design, development, testing and deployment of automated systems and other tools to improve quality and productivity of the research enterprise. The person will participate in determining requirements, and assist with the evaluation, design, and development and implementation of information systems used in electronic research administration (eRA). In all efforts, proper documentation for all systems and reports will be maintained.

The Applications Developer will participate in short-range planning and provide input to long-range planning regarding emerging data and systems issues.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and four years of any combination of relevant experience, education and/or certification. The level of expertise and skill required to qualify for a position in this classification is generally attained through combinations of education and experience in the field. While such employees commonly have a bachelor’s or higher degree, no particular academic degree is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate area of specialization and a minimum two years of experience in designing, testing, debugging and deploying web applications and their related databases in current technologies. Demonstrated experience with .NET, ASP, HTML, CSS, Java Script and other object oriented languages is preferred. Experience with UI development, Subversion, DotNetNuke and JavaScript libraries (such as jQuery and Knockout) would be considered beneficial. Excellent structured query language experience with SQL Server is required (Oracle and MySQL a plus). The successful candidate should have the desire and ability to learn additional technologies as projects demand.

The candidate must be highly analytical, demonstrate problem-solving skills and be able to communicate clearly and effectively. The successful applicant will demonstrate an independent work initiative, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, diplomacy and a professional demeanor. A desire to be immersed in the inner workings of research administration and compliance at a major research university is required.
