Position Summary: The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior scientist to engage in research related to Atlantic decadal variability and predictability. A key focus of the project will be studying the mechanisms of variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and determining the relevance of that variability to our ability to make decadal predictions. Another focus of the research will be the impact of the AMOC and the associated sea-surface temperature and sea-ice on atmospheric circulation.
The position is for one year term, renewable for up to three years pending satisfactorily progress.
Complete applications, including a CV, publication list, at least 3 letters of recommendation, and a titled (about three page) research proposal should be submitted by October 15, 2013 for full consideration. For additional information, contact Rym Msadek (email@example.com) or Tom Delworth (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Essential Qualifications: The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. and make extensive use of both observations and a variety of models developed at GFDL to assess the impact of model resolution, sub-grid scale parameterizations, model biases and mean states on AMOC variability mechanisms. These models include the IPCC AR5 GFDL CM3 coupled model that implements the indirect effect of aerosols, and the newly developed GFDL CM2.5 high-resolution global climate model. Results will be compared to the NCAR models as part of a collaborative work and the robustness of the AMOC mechanisms and the related predictability will be assessed.
We invite applications from candidates who have one or more of the following attributes: (a) a strong background in ocean and atmosphere dynamics or a closely related field, (b) experience using and analyzing state of the art climate models, (c) strong scientific computing skills and experience in statistical analysis, and (d) good communication skills.
Education Required: Doctorate Degree
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled or See Position Summary.
