Position Summary: Princeton University is conducting a search for its next Director of Athletics with an anticipated start date of July 1st, 2014. In keeping with the Department of Athletics' mission to strive for excellence in academics and athletics, while embracing equity in opportunity, good sportsmanship, and ethical conduct, the Director of Athletics will lead an intercollegiate and campus recreation program that challenges and develops the physical, mental, and personal abilities of student-athletes for 38 varsity sports; foster the elements of integrity, sportsmanship and fair play; promote physical fitness, sports participation and athletics excellence; engender school spirit among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends; enhance the name of Princeton University; and generate revenues to help defray the costs of the athletics program, all while adhering to the policies of the Ivy League, ECAC, NCAA, and Princeton University.
Essential Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a successful record in administrative and leadership positions as well as a demonstrated commitment to the holistic academic and athletic development of the student-athlete within the context of a liberal arts education. He or she must: understand and embrace the university and the department's mission of "Education Through Athletics" in all of its facets; have the ability to effectively lead coaches and administrative staff and have a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and alumni; develop and manage a complex budget; understand the external functions of the department including fundraising, brand management, ticket selling, sponsorship, media and marketing; work collegially and collaboratively with other university colleagues ensuring the integration of the athletics department into the broader university community and possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of NCAA rules and guidelines is preferred.
Other requirements include: excellent management skills; proven organizational, planning, supervisory and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to make hard decisions in a fair and equitable manner; creativity, flexibility, resilience, intelligence, patience, and a quick wit and sense of humor; ability to be a leader in the operational affairs of the NCAA and the Ivy League; an understanding of and passion for the student-athlete experience; at all times have the capacity to act as a fiduciary for Princeton's intercollegiate athletic program.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree (advanced degree preferred) and prior experience leading a complex, dynamic organization.
The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.
