The Pennsylvania State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President and General Counsel. The VP and General Counsel serves as the University’s chief legal officer, reports directly to the President, and is a member of the President’s Council, which is the senior leadership team of the University. The position represents and directs the representation of the University in all legal matters; serves as legal advisor to the Board of Trustees, the President, and other senior administrators; and offers advice to other University entities on matters of law, policy and procedure, and institutional governance.
The Office of General Counsel is located on both the University Park and Hershey Medical Center campuses of Penn State. Penn State is a comprehensive research university, comprised of 24 campuses throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and is the land-grant university in Pennsylvania. The broad range of issues faced by the VP and General Counsel reflects the complex nature of an institution with 96,000 students, more than 40,000 full- and part-time employees, an international research enterprise, and a major medical center.
Candidates should hold a Juris Doctorate degree from a law school approved for accreditation by the American Bar Association; be a member in good standing of the Bar of the state in which they practice, and have eligibility for such standing in Pennsylvania. They are expected to have at least ten years experience as an attorney practicing in a relevant area of the law, and should have attained a position of senior responsibility in a law firm, government agency, corporation, or comparable entity. Experience as the general counsel to an organization or in the service of an organization is preferred, but not required.
