The Director of Information Technology oversees all of the University's technological operations. Currently, the Department is accountable for the campus telephone system, cable television system, electronic security systems, data network, wireless data network, Internet connectivity, administrative and academic data systems, data storage and retrieval systems, instructional technology, and some research equipment. Several of the chief tasks include review, identification and presentation of hardware and software to ensure that the technology capabilities are responsive to the needs of University, act as liaison between University department heads and the IT department, and supervise the Information Technology staff members.
Principal Responsibilities:
Perform all supervisory responsibilities associated with the IT department including employee related issues, training, and mentoring.
Plan and control staffing and development, organization, hardware acquisitions and facilities for the IT department to assure that they are consistent with and supportive of the University initiatives.
Forecast costs, equipment and personnel needs for projects and programs as required and related to IT and University operations and review and evaluate all IT project plans and proposals to assess project feasibility and requirements.
Oversight of the design, development and maintenance of network systems, programs, and systems software to meet the needs of the University.
Develop department annual budgets and administer funds according to budget approval.
Develop strategic plans with the IT staff to identify Information Technology applications to support the University and create new strategic options.
Develop computer information resources, provide for data security and control, strategic computing, and disaster recovery with IT staff.
Consult with users, management, vendors, and technicians to assess computing needs and system requirements and establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with campus constituencies.
Maintain a client service oriented operating philosophy within IT that is responsive to end-user needs, and is centered around the institutional vision and mission.
Oversee delivery of user training on an as-needed basis.
Compile and review records to determine department productivity, quality of output and cost of service.
Keep abreast of IT trends and advances relative to cost-benefit analyses in order to position the University for the future.
Identify sources of alternative funding.
Provide the means by which the University can use data to drive better decision-making.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
Demonstrated ability to communicate strategic technical information to non-technical University stakeholders.
Ability to work well with faculty, staff and students of varying levels of technical understanding.
Excellent time management and ability to define departmental priorities.
Demonstrate extensive knowledge in several professional disciplines and have the ability to integrate and apply information from different fields.
A comprehensive knowledge of the information systems technology subjects and extensive knowledge of hardware and software, with the ability to keep abreast of new technologies.
Ability to prioritize and organize.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
Minimum five to seven years' experience with increasing responsibility in the operation and management of various aspects of Information Technology.
Previous experience in management of personnel.
Knowledge of networking technologies and strategies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in CIS or related areas.
Previous higher education administration experience.
Knowledge of and experience in developing/deploying frameworks for online and blended education.
