The Systems & Metadata Law Librarian plays an integral and foundational role in the functioning of the Law Library. S/he participates in shaping the direction and policies of the primary Library systems relating to resources and discovery, as well as implementing, updating and troubleshooting them. S/he assists and advises in training the library staff in their use and optimization. S/he is fully trained in the Access policies and is able to cover the Information Desk when needed. A sampling of the systems used: Alma/Primo (replacing Millennium, NUCat, TDNet & EDS), a Digital Repository System powered by Fedora, OCLC WorldCat, Banner, IRis, SSRN, etc.
The Systems & Metadata Law Librarian is an integral part of the Selections team. S/he works closely with the Collection Development Law Librarian to distribute the work-load of metadata creation, updating & synchronization of data, and cross-training. S/he is responsible for staying up-to-date in metadata standards and best practices and should seek out development opportunities. The Systems & Metadata Law Librarian will perform original and copy cataloging as well as other metadata creation and editing; be responsible for data loads to and from a variety of sources; and be the Law Library’s local expert on all metadata and systems related issues.
The Systems & Metadata Law Librarian is an integral part of the Law Library’s team of professional Librarians. All professional Librarians in the Law Library participate in a variety of teaching, reference and committee work. Teaching involves mentoring students in their first year program (LSSC), co-teaching Advanced Legal Research (ALR) two quarters each year, and teaching as requested in the classes of their faculty liaisons. Reference includes being the faculty research liaison to assigned faculty members and some coverage/back-up of the Reference Desk. Committee work as assigned.
An MLS or MLIS from an American Library Association accredited school is required with at least two to four years of demonstrated successful original cataloging experience using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC formats, OCLC, and an integrated library system in an academic or research library. A familiarity with RDA is desirable.
This position requires flexibility and enthusiasm for learning new metadata skills and new information access technologies and requires at least two years of working with loading records and working with integrated library systems and other library technology.
At least two years of working in a law library and possessing a comfortable familiarity with legal research materials as well as legal research techniques in both print and electronic techniques. In addition, instructional/training skills and the ability to present materials to staff, students and faculty both in informal and formal situations is also required.
Good social skills and the ability to work with a diverse staff and patron population. Sense of humor is essential.
