The student services coordinator is a member of an academic advising team and works with the academic advisor, who is responsible for managing and advising their DMSB class year. The role of the coordinator is to provide academic and organizational support to students; enhance communication between the college, advisors, and faculty to improve student retention. The coordinator will handle advising students on routine college curricula, policies and procedures and will leverage the class advisor so he/she can spend time with students who have complex issues. The coordinator has less professional and academic experience then the academic advisor.
The coordinator provides academic guidance to DMSB students concerning; co-op scheduling, course selection, pre-registration, registration and preparation for graduation and university policies; and, assists in advising on the academic curriculum to develop a correct and coherent academic curriculum guide. The student services coordinator will prepare materials and participate in workshops and class information sessions, orientations, Welcome Days; maintain student email contact; assist with all Blackboard Community and FaceBook updates, and develop publications for the assigned class year. Assist the academic advising with the implementation of year specific student developmental programs. The student services coordinator will produce correspondence, analyze data, and act as a back-up resource to the front desk as needed.
The student services coordinator serves as a mentor and guide throughout the academic career of the students. Given that academic advising team is assigned approximately 500 students, the demand factors on the student services coordinator are extremely high. The coordinator is the person who provides academic assistance and coordinates programming with the academic advisor.
During the following academic years, the student services coordinator will assist the academic advisor in completing the following activities with their class year:
1) Freshman year: prepare and teach a one credit course helping freshman CBA students to chart their academic progress and skill development. Conduct sophomore planning meetings.
2) Junior year: conduct junior clearance to map out the students final year of academics.
3) Senior year, conduct a senior interview which results in a correct and coherent “Graduation Plan” which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree. Then, in January, May and August performs final clearances of seniors in preparation for graduation.
Bachelor’s Degree required. This is a professional entry-level position. Preferably a minimum of 2 years work experience in an institute of higher learning. Previous college/university experience within an academic setting is a plus. Individual must plan to complete a masters program within a reasonable time period. Should enjoy working with students and helping to guide them through their academics to graduation. Previous counseling experience and knowledge of student development theory is a plus.
Excellent computer, written, and oral communication skills required. Individual must work well under pressure and have proven management skills, plus demonstrated counseling ability. Individual must demonstrate the ability to set goals, take initiative, follow through and organize effectively. Individual must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work with precision, complete projects and be able to keep calm under pressure and both be able to relate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Finally, the individual must be able to work independently and be an integral member of a team.
