The Staff Photographer produces all photographic content for the Department of External Affairs. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the position is responsible for producing a wide variety of creative, high-quality images that promote Northeastern University’s academic and research enterprise, including its experiential learning model, through faculty and student achievements for the university’s high-profile web sites, as well as print publications produced by Marketing and Communications. Assignments include group and individual portraits (in-studio and on-location), studio headshots, daily news and event coverage, presidential appearances, campus life features and stock imagery, among others – both on and off campus.
Additional responsibilities include scheduling and coordinating in-studio and on-location photo shoots; planning and coordinating with writers, editors and others in Marketing and Communications to identify appropriate concepts, people and locations for assignments; taking multiple and varied photographs on every assignment to provide editors and writers with options for publication; editing digital images as appropriate to prepare them for publication; detailed captioning and archiving of images to make them easily retrievable; responding to requests for archived images; handling and maintaining all photo equipment and arranging for repair as needed.
Must be available for frequent night and weekend work projects. Flexibility and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment are required.
Staff photographer must have:
-creative talent and solid technical knowledge of relevant Nikon digital equipment and imaging/editing software, including Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic
-strong portrait photography skills, including studio and location lighting, posing and the ability provide courteous photo direction and guidance to high-profile subjects
-ability to work with both natural and artificial lighting to produce high-quality images that require minimal editing
-excellent organizational skills both in scheduling and image archiving
-ability to work independently and as part of a team
-energetic, proactive attitude and willingness to propose ideas and take the initiative
-ability to follow direction with a positive attitude
-excellent interpersonal communication skills
-At least 2 years of college.
-4-6 years of professional experience in an editorial photography position, preferably at a university, newspaper or web-based information gathering organization producing various types of photography with both natural and studio lighting including portraits of people, environmental portraits images of objects, on-location news coverage, crowd shots, etc.
-Knowledge of digital imaging and editing software (Photoshop, Photo Mechanic) is required.
-Experience in multimedia production (audio slideshows, short video pieces, etc.) is a plus.
Digital portfolio should include 10-20 images with complete captions that includes strong, creative portraiture, features, planned news and event coverage.
