The Senior Data Analyst in the Office of Institutional Research and Data Administration assumes a lead role in collecting, compiling, managing, and presenting/reporting data and information used in various reports, publications, and internal management analyses. Each year hundreds of data and analysis requests are received by the office from both internal and external audiences. The Senior Data Analyst compiles and reports these data for various purposes including but not limited to: government compliance reporting, regulatory reporting, accreditation support, external ranking and guidebook surveys, internal management requests, external data requests, and NU publications. The Senior Data Analyst assumes the lead role for compliance, regulatory, and ranking/guidebook reporting. The Senior Data Analyst also participates in the preparation of various publications used to report standard data within the campus community, and will plan for and develop new data analyses/reports that present data of interest to the University community.
As part of ensuring that the data we provide is correct and consistent with standards, the Senior Data Analyst is responsible for monitoring the quality of the data that populates the data reporting environment. To fulfill this role, the Senior Data Analyst works closely with the Data Administration office and functional units across campus to ensure that data in the reporting environment are consistent with standards and, therefore, ready to use in reporting. The Senior Data Analyst also takes a lead role in the various technical functions within the office which may include managing the shared drive, the department website, or the department electronic library.
The Senior Data Analyst must have strong technical skills and the desire to expand upon those skills through formal and informal training opportunities. The position involves a significant amount of time working on the computer, but it also involves interaction with people and requires a customer service mentality in order to adequately respond to the requests from both university offices and external agencies. In particular, the Senior Data Analyst must be able to offer guidance and insight regarding the data and information that will assist those submitting requests in meeting their needs. The Senior Data Analyst must have strong analytic skills, be detail oriented and willing to work with others to maintain and improve upon the quality of the data reported through IR and by users within the University community.
This position requires four-six years of professional work experience, preferably with experience in institutional research and/or higher education. This individual must be knowledgeable of reporting standards in higher education and the avenues in which reporting is carried out. He/she must have the capacity to work with large data sets, and develop competencies in data reporting, data manipulation, analysis, and presentation with software tools including but not limited to BRIO, Excel, Access, and SPSS. It is also critical that the Senior Data Analyst understand the nuances that inform data reporting and analysis, pay close attention to detail, have the ability to work with others, be adept in translating data requests into actionable projects, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. The minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree preferred. Strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills are a must as is a strong technical aptitude.
