The primary purpose of the role of the Intellectual Property Manager is to maximize the value of Northeastern University’s intellectual property assets through strategically minded, professionally orchestrated development and management of a meaningful intellectual property portfolio. Responsibilities include the effective development and management of the University’s intellectual property assets, management of outside counsel relationships, facilitating agreements supporting activities related to the development and enforcement of intellectual property rights, and developing and implementing intellectual property policy and education programs. An urgent and immediate focus on assessing, improving and memorializing the intellectual property management process for maximum effectiveness is mandatory. The Intellectual Property Manager will support the Director of the Center for Research Innovation and the Commercialization Staff in the pursuit of commercial agreements for the development and monetization of the University’s intellectual property portfolio. The Intellectual Property Manager will be a seamless liaison between the Center for Research Innovation (CRI) and the Office of the General Counsel, including working with both offices to maximize effectiveness and impact, while at the same time efficiently managing patent expenses consistently and reliably. This will include tracking, monitoring and reporting expense activity. In addition, the Intellectual Property Manager will support the protection of trademarks and copyrights, as well as the identification and enforcement of all intellectual property rights. The Intellectual Property Manager will also coordinate activities for the pursuit of any license agreements in default.
This position requires a highly responsible and professional individual. Organized, timely communications and efficient time management with demonstrated prioritization skills are mandatory for success in this position.
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively, excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact internally and externally; strong interpersonal skills, including integrity, courtesy, professionalism and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain work relationships, strong organizational and analytical skills.
Experience managing intellectual property along continuum from assessment to its protection, development, commercialization, and enforcement. Experience in counseling on the commercial options and licensing of intellectual property, conducting technology audits, and other functions related to the assessment and management of a diverse portfolio of intellectual property. Demonstrated analytical skills necessary to interpret, analyze, advise on and apply complex University, state, federal and sponsor regulations. Demonstrated knowledge of issues typical to legally binding agreements, including but not limited to, intellectual property rights, indemnification and insurance requirements, mitigation of publication restrictions, ownership of research data, and export control issues.
Required Skills, Knowledge: Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required. Ability to interact creatively and harmoniously with colleagues and inventors. Demonstrated competencies in managing complex inter- and intra- organizational issues in a timely manner and managing multiple projects simultaneously. General knowledge of technology transfer and detailed knowledge of the laws that relate to intellectual property, particularly patenting, is essential. Knowledge of and experience in technology, business and other licensing and business principles strongly preferred. Experience working with and managing outside intellectual property counsel preferred.
Minimum Educational Requirements:
Must have a J.D., a minimum of 8-10 yrs. experience as an intellectual property lawyer and be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Industry and or Venture experience strongly desired. 3-5 years of technology transfer experience desired.
