Position Summary:
Provide leadership to the Department of Residential Life toward the management of a residence hall environment that houses over 8,000 students. Develop a Residential Life program that supports the mission of the University, optimizes individual growth, facilitates an acceptance and appreciation of individual and group responsibility and fosters community development. The Director will insure that experiential learning finds expression in the activities and programs of Residential Life; will create and sustain an environment of innovation and creativity; will oversee the development of Living Learning and Virtual communities as well as use social media and other technological platforms as a means of creating and enhancing community; will instill in all staff by teaching and practice the values of Engagement, Learning, Excellence, Innovation, Integrity, Interculturalism and Collaboration. Insure residence hall environments are safe, secure, and clean, in good repair and well maintained. The Director works closely with the department of Housing Services in order to insure excellence in customer service and to coordinate the planning and direction of all administrative, business, personnel and budgetary affairs. Supervise the planning, development and implementation of educational awareness programs in the residence halls. Provide training and supervision of the 25 professional staff, 7 graduate staff and 187 Resident Assistants in order to ensure the highest quality of programs, services and facilities for residents.
The Director will also play a critical role in the University’s efforts to build and enhance our relationships between our students and our neighborhood community. The Director will develop policies and strategies to improve student behavior and interactions within the community, and will serve as a facilitator for issues that affect the relationship between students, staff and our host communities.
The Director will coordinate and work with the appropriate University constituencies for Opening/Closing the residence halls.
The Director develops and cultivates relationships with academic departments and faculty and coordinates the selection of the Faculty in Residence.
Works with Student Affairs units and students, to enhance community atmosphere within residence halls.
Oversees assessment activities to insure that Residential Life is data driven in determining its goals and outcome driven in determining levels of success.
Qualifications:
Masters degree, Doctorate preferred, in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Education Administration or Business Administration. The qualified candidate will possess a minimum of 10 – 15 years progressively responsible supervisory and managerial experience in Residential Life and/or related field. The position requires strategic thinking and planning skills; strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators and students at all levels in a complex and diverse environment. Position requires proficiency in the development and management of staff and the development of community. Position requires knowledge of facility management, sophisticated knowledge of student development, collaborative learning, residence hall programming, building Living Learning/Virtual Communities, and staff development. Ability to successfully address student needs.
