Northeastern University is seeking an innovative and visionary leader for the position of Director of Public Safety who can handle the challenges of today but also anticipate and plan for the challenges and opportunities of the future in a university that has dramatically increased in quality and prestige over the past few years. Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private research university located in the heart of Boston with satellite campuses throughout the world. The Northeastern University Public Safety Division provides a comprehensive program of public safety services, including police, security, crime prevention, fire safety, emergency medical services, and has the overarching mission of ensuring that the University community remains a safe and pleasant place in which to study, live and work. The department’s current authorized strength is 91, with 60 sworn officers and 31 civilians. The FY 2013 budget is $7.9 million. The Director of Public Safety will report to the Chief Operating Officer.
The Director of Public Safety serves as chief law enforcement officer and has overall responsibility for budgets, human resource management, labor relations, and priority setting for security for all of Northeastern’s campuses, including risk assessment and short- and long-range emergency plans. The Director also is responsible for being the spokesperson for the department and aligning the department’s practices with the entrepreneurial vision and direction of the University.
The candidate must have extensive urban policing experience, demonstrated competencies in effective leadership and community policing, and superior interpersonal and communication skills in order to build on good working relationships and partner with area law enforcement agencies and constituencies within and outside the University community, including satellite campuses throughout the world. The successful candidate should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the role of an urban university within the larger community. The successful candidate should have experience developing and expanding critical interdepartmental relationships. The successful candidate will have a proven track record as a leader who has demonstrated capacity to innovate and be visible on and off the campus. The candidate should have the ability to inspire confidence as a senior representative of the university. An important qualification will be experience working independently and effectively on public safety matters with diverse communities, such as the students, including students from diverse backgrounds, administration, faculty, and staff of Northeastern University. Experience with and a strong commitment to innovation, technology and community involvement are required. Experience with the unique policing needs of a campus environment is valuable but not required. The ideal candidate will be an innovator who is creative in the pursuit of policies, strategies, and technologies that support a highly complex and entrepreneurial learning environment. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree. Ten years of progressively responsible managerial experience in policing, and knowledge of best practices in policing are prerequisites. A graduate-level degree would be an asset, as would additional specialized leadership programs, such as the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), FBI National Academy, or the Southern Police Institute.
