Position Summary:
The Data Administration Office (DAO) manages the institutional data for Northeastern University and provides reliable, accurate, secure and accessible data to meet the strategic and management needs at all levels of the campus. “Institutional data” are data relevant to planning, managing, operating, and auditing of University academic and administrative activities, in particular the data available from the University’s Operational Data Store (ODS). Broad responsibilities of DAO include data policy, data definition, information infrastructure, data access/use, user training, and data quality.
The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) will be a dedicated member of the Institutional Research and Data Administration (IRDA) team responsible for ensuring a successful implementation and ongoing growth and development of the University’s enterprise data warehouse and business intelligence capabilities. The position performs a variety of business intelligence functions and requires considerable business, administrative, and sufficient complementary expertise in a complex organizational environment.
Under the guidance of the Director of Data Administration and the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost of IRDA, the incumbent will work closely with business partners, including colleges, other business units, and the Enterprise Data Services team, to understand and gather functional requirements documenting end users’ reporting and analytical needs, and assist in transforming these needs into Business Intelligence specifications used in the design, development, and deployment of EDW applications. Qualifications:
• Skills and Experience
o The candidate must have the ability to analyze user data requirements, translate those requirements into technical specifications, and then work closely with IT counterparts to ensure BI solutions meet customer needs. This position is specifically housed in the functional/business area so that the BI work is approached from the user perspective, but a technical background is needed since it is critical to work closely with IT counterparts.
o The candidate must have strong technical skills and the ability to learn and apply new technologies.
o Solid understanding of systems architecture, systems testing, and software development best practices; experience with Software Development Life Cycle.
o Understanding of effective report/dashboard design and standards. Prototyping using tools such as Excel or PowerPoint.
o Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and partners. Requires both oral and written communication capabilities. Also, is timely in responding to customers/clients and works to address client requests effectively and quickly.
o Operation or process-oriented approach to projects and tasks – completes tasks in a consistent, reliable, repeatable manner.
o Must possess initiative and strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills; strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent project management skills.
o Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; possess maturity in judgment, creativity, and ability to get along with widely diverse personalities; able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and integrity; able to prioritize and plan complex work in a decentralized environment.
o Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field.
o Experience in a higher education environment with functional knowledge and exposure to Banner subject area usage (Student, Finance, HR, and Advancement) preferred.
o Experience implementing Blackboard Analytics a plus.
• Technical Background
o 3+ years working with business intelligence projects. Experience with one or more industry leading BI applications such as Cognos, BusinessObjects, or OBIEE.
o Understanding of SQL query language required.
o Experience with design and creation of operational and analytical reports for end users.
o Familiarity with OLAP solutions and the design process required to implement such systems.
o Understanding of data warehouse best practices and methodologies, including Kimball, Inmon, etc.
o Familiarity with design and implementation of dimensional models, OLAP cubes, and other analytic database objects.
o Experience with MDX query language a plus.
