Asst/Assoc/Full Professor in Data Science
Northeastern University
Asst/Assoc/Full Professor in Data Science
Requisition Number: FTFR000278
Division/College: College of Science
FT/PT: Full Time
Position Summary:
Northeastern University invites applications and nominations of all ranks (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) for multiple faculty positions in the field of Data Science. Data Science is generally used to describe a new field of scientific investigation that focuses on extracting value from the flood of data that is now being generated through a multitude of sources: from transportation and mobility infrastructure to smartphones and social media. The University is interested in scholars addressing the technical challenges of working with data sets whose size is beyond the ability of commonly used software tools to capture, manage, and process; as well as domain applications uncovering the patterns and mechanisms that characterize the means by which the data are generated, mathematically formulating them, and understanding their universality, predictive power and the limits of their applicability.
This cluster search builds on Northeastern’s national prominence in network science, computational social science and the digital humanities, already forming a federation of world leading research centers and laboratories and has the aim of creating an unprecedented collaborative group of scientists across disciplines to discern the meaning that is hidden in massive data streams, and to link those uncovered patterns to broader theories about how complex systems and networks work.
Anticipated duties will include establishing and sustaining an independent, high-quality research program and mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. A strong commitment to teaching and active participation in expanding the University’s educational activities by developing specialized courses and related areas of scientific expertise are expected. Cross-disciplinary and cross-college appointments are possible.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a PhD or doctorate degree by the start date in disciplines including the study of economic and financial systems, social systems, management and business networks, socio-technical infrastructure, health and environmental systems, the science of science, as well as general risk and crisis scenario forecasting up to and including policy advice, or a related Data Science discipline. Applicants must also have a strong record of research in Data Science. We welcome applications from faculty engaged in research areas and technologies including, but not limited to, digital epidemiology, public health, computational social science, business, economics, applied statistics, network science, machine learning, data mining, big data visualization and design, and complex systems modeling.
