Position Summary:
The Department of Health Sciences is seeking an Environmental Sociologist who works in the area of health and the environment, with emphasis on the impact of environmental factors on the health care system. The faculty member will be part of the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute (SSEHRI), a new institute that specializes in collaborative research at the intersection of social science and environmental health science. SSEHRI is strongly committed to interdisciplinary research and to collaboration with partners such as environmental organizations and government agencies. SSEHRI has several grants from NIH and NSF, with a variety of collaborators in social sciences, environmental health sciences, and computer science.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have the PhD in Sociology or a doctorate in a related field at the start of employment. Examples of research areas that would fit this position are: effects of environmental contaminants on patient and hospital worker health, contamination of water supplies from pharmaceutical waste, social movements dealing with healthy hospitals, medical waste incineration, labor-environmental coalitions dealing with health care settings, supply chains of environmental toxicants used in hospital building and cleaning supplies. The successful candidate will be expected to play a major role in the SSEHRI and the Department of Health Sciences, teach both graduate and undergraduate courses, maintain an active research agenda, secure extramural funding, and serve on departmental and university committees.
