Position Summary:
The Assistant Cooperative Education Coordinator for the College of Science Professional Science Master’s programs in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics will work with students, faculty, and employers to promote the integration of a practice-based component with the liberal learning and discipline-based components of students’ education. This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position.
The Cooperative Education Coordinator will work with industry, academic, and government employers to develop internship opportunities in the fields of biotechnology and bioinformatics. He/she will develop partnerships and internships with employers by working with executive, supervisory, and human resources contacts; develop new and maintain ongoing co-op positions and make appropriate referrals for students to apply to these positions; maintain understanding of industry/field, employers, and positions; maintain a comprehensive database of all co-op activities.
The Co-op Coordinator will prepare students for the co-op search and work experience, both by teaching and/or coordinating workshops and seminar courses on effective career building, resume writing, interviewing, and business communications, as well as through individual meetings. He/she will maintain contact with students during their co-op assignment to address any problems that might arise, and will provide an opportunity for students to reflect about their co-op experience when they return to classes. The Coordinator will collaborate with faculty advisors and administrators to help students integrate their co-op and academic education. He/she will share knowledge of the industry with academic faculty in order to integrate work-based learning with curriculum-based learning. He/she will coordinate with other co-op coordinators to ensure that students have access to a wide array of experiential learning opportunities and will attend group meetings to ensure collaboration and support of goals.
The Co-o Coordinator will, in tandem with the program faculty advisors and staff, provide students with course advising as needed. The Co-op Coordinator will perform alumni outreach for purposes of building on network of industry contacts: maintain records of placement; develop and maintain systems for tracking and communicating with alumni including social networks such as LinkedIn; advise student/alumni club.
Qualifications:
A master’s degree or its academic equivalent and a minimum of three years of relevant professional work experience are required. An academic degree (B.S. or M.S.) in the life sciences is required. Must have excellent interpersonal, analytical, systems management, and communication (written and oral) skills. Also must have basic computer/technology and database maintenance skills. The ability to work independently and on a team is essential. Prior job development experience strongly preferred; knowledge of cooperative education a plus. Experience working with a diverse staff/student population, and a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in the workplace required. Must have personal transportation and a valid driver’s license in order to travel locally to co-op sites.
