Newberry College, a selective, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, seeks a dynamic scholar, strategic thinker, and experienced leader to serve as its 22nd President. As the chief executive officer of the institution, the President will build on the College’s steady increases in enrollment, strengthened financial status, well-maintained physical plant, and enhanced academic programs, while strategically positioning the institution for future success.

While embracing and supporting the venerable history and traditions of Newberry College and its valued relationship with the ELCA, the President will provide visionary leadership that will enrich the College’s challenging and inspiring educational environment for students.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the Newberry College President will be to:
-- Foster a vibrant and empowered learning community through a proven leadership style that evokes trust, welcomes collaboration, reflects confident decision making, and effectively engages the talents and experiences of the administration, faculty, staff, and students
-- Demonstrate a strong commitment to high academic standards for teaching, learning, and scholarship
-- Work effectively with the Board of Trustees in advocating the current and future needs and plans of the College
-- Implement, evaluate, refine, and advance Newberry College’s vision, mission, and strategic plan in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
-- Oversee a sound budgetary and fiscal planning process that sustains and enhances the College’s long-term financial strength and fully utilizes its resources
-- Recruit, develop, and lead staff, and administrators and establish a strong leadership team
-- Support and participate fully in fund-raising efforts, working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees and Advancement staff to develop and implement a successful program for resource development
-- Preserve, nurture, and enhance the College’s relationships, partnerships, and connections internally and externally
-- Engage regularly in student interaction and serve as a role model that encourages student involvement in service-learning activities that benefit the local and global community
-- Represent the College within the local and professional community, communicating clearly the College’s vision and mission
-- Participate in the community as an active resident and local leader
Requirements
An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree is preferred. Experience in teaching, scholarship, and service is required. The successful candidate also will demonstrate:
-- Extensive knowledge of and experience with academic communities of higher learning
-- Knowledgeable and judicious budgetary and fiscal planning and oversight experience
-- Commitment to a progressive vision and the future growth in terms of teaching, scholarship, service, population, finance, technology, and facilities
-- An ability to develop and implement long-term strategic goals and plans
-- Commitment to shared governance, including faculty, staff, and students
-- Active participation in civic and community affairs
-- Commitment to the professional development of faculty and staff, and a track record of developing people and leaders
-- An ability to communicate effectively and inspire confidence
-- A strong work ethic and a personal and professional commitment to integrity
-- Essential leadership in fund-raising, working collaboratively with the stakeholders and Advancement staff to implement successfully a resource development program through gifts and public and private grants
-- Commitment to diversity among faculty, students, and staff
The President shall be a member of a Christian denomination who appreciates the Lutheran heritage and theology and supports the long-standing relationship of the College with the Lutheran Church. The President will be encouraged to become a member of a local congregation.

The Institution
Founded in 1856, Newberry College is nationally recognized for its commitment to a values-based curriculum that assures every student individual attention and guidance in a teaching-learning environment. Newberry honors its Lutheran heritage while also welcoming and reflecting a variety of religious traditions within its student body, faculty, staff, administration, and Board of Trustees.
As a Lutheran college, Newberry recognizes the value of academic freedom, intellectual dialogue, and diversity of viewpoint. The Lutheran tradition also celebrates the concept of vocation, leading students to prepare for meaningful life experiences, occupations, and service to the world as well as to the church.
Newberry’s 90-acre, wooded campus is near the center of downtown Newberry, South Carolina. The 32 buildings and athletic facilities are well maintained and well equipped to serve student needs. Four buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The College has experienced impressive growth during the last decade. Newberry has a current enrollment of approximately 1,110 students, with more than 70 percent living on campus.
Newberry is a living and learning community that transforms study into action through personal and professional interaction. The institution’s engaged, values-based, liberal arts general education curriculum creates a strong foundation for its broad range of majors and pre-professional programs. The College offers 25 majors, 31 minors, and customized learning opportunities.
The College has a 17:1 student-faculty ratio, and faculty members know their students and provide individual attention. The faculty consists of nearly 100 full- and part-time members, with 75 percent holding terminal degrees.
The formal academic program combines a liberal arts core curriculum with in-depth study in a variety of traditional disciplines and selected professional and pre-professional fields. The College awards four baccalaureate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Bachelor of Science.
Among the College’s signature courses of study are its Church Leadership track that prepares graduates for seminary or for lay ministry in congregations, NCATE-accredited Teacher Education program, and nursing program, which partners with the Lexington Medical Center. The College’s Forensic Chemistry concentration is the first of its kind in South Carolina. The Communications program features state-of-the-art studios and equipment, and the Music program has a jazz minor.
The College’s Summerland Honors Program offers an interdisciplinary course of study for qualified students. Its Values-Based Learning Program promotes service-learning across the curriculum.
Newberry has a distinctive athletic program with more than 50 percent of its students participating in intercollegiate sports. The 16 men’s and women’s athletic teams compete successfully in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Conference, and several Newberry teams are South Atlantic Conference Academic Champions.

The College is located in the historic city of Newberry, South Carolina, with tree-lined streets and antebellum mansions. The beautifully restored Opera House contributes to the community’s reputation as a center for the performing arts.
A strong sense of family is pervasive in this idyllic academic community. The city has been named by Sweitzer & Fields as one of the “50 Best Small Southern Towns” and in Norman Crampton’s book as one of the “100 Best Small Towns in America.”
In addition to easy access to Columbia and Greenville, South Carolina, Newberry is only a two-hour drive from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina.
The temperate climate provides many year-round recreational opportunities and sporting activities. Lake Murray, a 50,000-acre lake with 520 miles of shoreline is easily accessible, located 18 miles to the east and extends into four counties – Newberry, Saluda, Lexington, and Richland. One of the State’s finest recreational assets, Lake Murray has many upscale housing developments around it.
