Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department's faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.
Essential Job Duties: The primary responsibilities of this position will include planning and scheduling field trips to collect samples, preparing and coordinating for sample collection, sample processing, pathogen isolation and data management. Additionally, this individual will train and mentor new individuals joining the lab. The ideal candidate will be expected to follow universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including pathogens. The incumbent will also be responsible for ordering supplies, keeping current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements and monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
Department Required Skills : Combination of training and experience required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Well versed with computing skills and able to use various software applications, such as excel spreadsheet. Microbiology experience working with bacterial pathogens, their isolation and characterization and in preparing and sterilizing different media. The person should have experience in the field of molecular biology.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: The individual will utilize detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. The candidate should be well versed in running polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Candidate should be willing to collect samples including fecal and blood samples from animals (pigs) at farm and slaughter.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of start date.
