Primary Function of Organization Unit: Camcore (www.camcore.org) is an International Tree Breeding and Conservation Program with projects in 22 countries and has been in operation for 33 years. It is part of the Forestry and Environmental Resources Department at North Carolina State University.
Essential Job Duties: Camcore is a renowned international tree breeding and conservation program located at North Carolina State University. The Tree Improvement Specialist will manage the expanding eucalypt tree improvement program at Camcore and serve as a link between traditional and molecular breeding efforts. The position will be responsible for eucalypt breeding and testing efforts, which includes teaching Camcore members how to successfully make eucalypt hybrid crosses and manage pollen, as well as design genetic trials and analyze seedling and clonal data. The position will work with the seed and pollen laboratory technician on the distribution of genetic material for field trials around the world and is expected to maintain trial databases according to Camcore protocol. The specialist will be required to develop research initiatives for Camcore members and have the ability to analyze and interpret molecular marker data. The candidate is expected to publish articles in scientific journals and attract some outside funding for research projects. The specialist would be asked to give short courses on eucalypt breeding and silvicultural research to Camcore members upon request. The job will require frequent international travel to Latin America, Southern and Eastern Africa, and Southeast Asia each year. It is essential that the candidate be able to work well with colleagues in other disciplines at the university and possess a cultural awareness when representing Camcore in international activities. The tree improvement specialist will be located at NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The candidate will report to the Camcore Director and work jointly with the Quantitative Geneticist, Technical Supervisor, and the Data Base Manager in the program. Minimum Education/Experience: A Ph.D. in Forestry, Forest Genetics, or a related field. The specialist must have practical field experience in grafting, making controlled crosses and managing pollen of eucalypts. The successful candidate must be fluent in English/Spanish or Portuguese (spoken & written), and have at least 5-years of international forestry research experience.
Department Required Skills : The candidate must have excellent public speaking skills in English to represent Camcore effectively at meetings with the private sector and government agencies around the world. The specialist must demonstrate the ability to write scientific publications and obtain funds from outside sources. The candidate should have good data management skills which include practical experience with SAS and Excel, familiarity with ASREML, and various molecular marker software, and be able to analyze large data sets and estimate genetic parameters. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: It is preferred that the candidate can instruct members on vegetative propagation of eucalypts and has knowledge of wood properties. Having some skills with "R" software programing language would be useful. The candidate should have at least 5 years of international experience in plantation forestry in Latin America and/or southern Africa in tree breeding research and development. The candidate should possess preferably excellent public speaking & writing skills in Spanish.
