Primary Function of Organization Unit: The 831 positions of Facilities Operations service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of Ground and Transportation Infrastructure. Facilities Operations provides maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to: deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair and building and equipment modifications to the University.
Essential Job Duties: The primary purpose of the position is to provided skilled operation and maintenance of large vehicles and equipment required to complete routinely scheduled and emergency operations managed by Facilities. The position also provides field supervision and training of operators, lead operator for weather events.
Department Required Skills : Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. Position serves in a critical role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations. Experience with heavy equipment operation. Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot or maintain vehicle and equipment mechanical systems such as engine, transmission, exhaust, brakes, suspension, tires, and hydraulics. Ability to use hand tools, air tools and hydraulic jacks necessary to perform repairs and maintenance. Ability to provide on the job training to operators in the areas of equipment operations, safety, inspection, maintenance,repair and policy and procedures. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Two to three years experience in heavy equipment operations. High School/GED and/or vocational or technical school.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Valid NC CDL Class A or Class B Driver's License required and must be maintained. Forklift, crane and excavation certified. Certifications must be maintained while employed at NCSU.
