Full Professor-Geospatial Analytics
As we've done for 125 years, NC State University continues to transform lives on campus, in North Carolina, across our nation, and throughout the world every day. With more than 34,000 students and 7,000 faculty and staff, NC State is a comprehensive public research university globally recognized for leadership in developing new knowledge, educating the next generation for the use of that knowledge, and applying that knowledge for the benefit of society.
Position Number: 00102987
Primary Function of Organization Unit: As one of the leading land-grant institutions in the nation, North Carolina State University is proud to announce its Chancellor's Faculty Excellence Program, a cluster hire program that marks the first major initiative of the university's 2011-2020 strategic plan 'The Pathway to the Future'. Starting in 2012, NC State will hire thirty-eight faculty members across twelve research areas, or "clusters", to promote interdisciplinary scholarship and the development of innovative curriculum in emerging areas of strategic strength. http://www.ncsu.edu/faculty-and-staff/workthatmatters/ Through this faculty cluster hire, NC State will create a unique interdisciplinary research and PhD program in Geospatial Analytics to address the extensive research needs in both basic geospatial sciences and the corresponding computer science and mathematical modeling disciplines. This interdisciplinary program, designed in part to address the nationally identified shortage for geospatial scientists and professionals, will be strengthened through the hiring of a senior geospatial scientist and two junior scientists. These individuals will organize and lead NC Stateas dispersed, but very successful, Geospatial Information Science and Technology research and teaching programs (GIS.ncsu.edu) across 15 departments on campus. These faculty additions will allow NC State to significantly expand its research initiatives in spatial analytics and algorithmic development and computation, mobile GIS, spatial data mining, and in particular remote sensing. These activities will be shared with the university community and the public via collaboration and linked visualization capabilities connecting with the NCSU Libraries and with the new Nature Research Center at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
Essential Job Duties: NC State University is seeking a senior scientist to co-lead its Center for Earth Observation and Geospatial Analytics research and teaching program. The successful candidate will lead research teams focused on advanced remote sensing and geospatial modeling science, assist with the direction of the University's Center for Earth Observation, develop and teach graduate courses in advanced spatial analysis and remote sensing, assist with the planning and implementation of a new graduate MS/Phd in geospatial analytics, assist with the recruitment of two new assistant/associate professor geospatial faculty, and co-direct the new geospatial visualization research facility. This position is our initial hire in the expanded geospatial analytics initiative which in turn is part of the Chancellor's Faculty Excellence Program initiated in Spring 2012 (http://www.ncsu.edu/faculty-and-staff/workthatmatters/). The very successful geospatial science graduate research program (gis.ncsu.edu) is expanding to address both basic geo-research needs and corresponding programs in computational visualization and spatial mathematical modeling. This expansion will focus on remote sensing and 'big data' issues and will be linked to parallel Faculty Excellence programs in Data Driven Science, Forensic Sciences, and Global Environmental Change as well as NC State's unique Institute for Advanced Analytics (analytics.ncsu.edu). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build out the geospatial research team with two new additional geospatial faculty hires as well as new opportunities to collaborate with the other 30+ new Chancellor's Faculty currently being recruited. This is in addition to collaborations with the 25+ current GIS faculty that are spread among 15 of the University's colleges and departments. The new geospatial positions will be supported by our entirely new 2,000 square foot geo-visualization laboratory and newly renovated 1,800 square foot experimental teaching facility. The position will be located in the University's Center for Earth Observation which is administered by the College on Natural Resources and currently houses 8 full time faculty, 6 full time staff, and 25+ graduate students. The position duties include: 1) leading an internationally recognized geoscience research program with an emphasis in remote sensing. 2) mentoring outstanding graduate students and post-docs. 3) developing and expanding collaborative research initiatives with internal and external partners that grow the domain of the university geospatial science and program. The anticipated time distribution among these duties is 50% research, 25 % teaching and mentoring, and 25% program leadership.
