Primary Function of Organization Unit: North Carolina Cooperative Extension partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians. Pasquotank County is located in Northeastern North Carolina approximately 40 miles inland from the Outer Banks and 30 miles south of Virginia. The county's population is approximately 36,000, with over 17,000 of the total population living in Elizabeth City, the county seat. Pasquotank is a rural county with a $45 million agricultural industry, a United States Coast Guard Base, two 4 year colleges and a community college.
Essential Job Duties: The County Extension Director is a member of the faculty of North Carolina State University. The major responsibility of the job is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total county Extension education program. Other responsibilities include organizing and allocating resources, marketing the Extension program, preparing budgets, maintaining administrative relationships, interpreting and communicating policy, teaching, evaluating, and reporting in the assigned county. The County Extension Director must be able to both lead and manage an interdisciplinary team. Coordination and alignment of agent's programs to meet the needs of their clientele and of county government is essential. This is a county department head level position and the County Extension Director will be expected to perform at that level and be accountable. Close communications with both the County Manager and County Commissioners is required. The County Extension Director is required to have an active Extension Advisory Council that meets on a regular basis. This group of volunteers represents all Extension program areas and performs both as advisors and advocates for the local Extension program. The County Extension Director is responsible for all supervision, staff development, evaluations, and alignment of work responsibilities. Travel within the district is required.
Department Required Skills : This position requires someone with strong leadership and communication skills. The ability to network with county government officials, local leaders, and the public is essential for accountability and visibility. A strong work ethic and the ability to build coalitions with a diverse clientele are essential. The County Extension Director must be visionary and have the ability to lead a staff to reach both individual and team goals. Excellent public relation skills are required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: A degree or working knowledge of Agriculture or appropriate subject matter is preferred. The ability to write and speak both publicly and in print is highly desirable. Grantsmanship skills and experience with the ability to secure and manage outside funding resources in order to develop innovative programming is desired.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required and must be maintained. In order to operate a state vehicle a valid North Carolina Driver's License is required and must be maintained.
