Primary Function of Organization Unit: As part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, new faculty in the Innovation and Design cluster will interact across college boundaries to help integrate management thinking and design thinking across NC State University, encompassing innovation in a variety of contexts. Essential Job Duties: As part of the Chancellor's Faculty Excellence Program, North Carolina State University (NC State) and the College of Design seek a faculty scholar at the Full Professor rank (may consider candidates at the Associate Professor rank), who will demonstrate skills in Industrial Design and/or Graphic Design. The position is part of the Innovation and Design cluster area, which initiates new ideas and forms of practice, products, services and business models between the College of Design and the Poole College of Management. We invite applications and nominations for innovative and transformative academic leaders, whose expertise will support Innovation and Design activities in research, teaching, and knowledge-sharing across NC State's colleges and the larger business community, nationally and internationally. As a senior faculty member, the position will require significant interaction with College of Management faculty in developing new curricular offerings for students from both areas and in securing external funding through grants and sponsored projects. The major goal of collaboration is to develop a high-level incubator of exploring new concepts, directions and processes focusing on the design-technology-business continuum. Teaching responsibilities will involve project-based and seminar courses, among other courses related to the cluster initiative.
Minimum Education/Experience: A terminal degree in Industrial Design, Graphic Design or a related discipline. Qualify for an appointment as Full Professor in the Department. While it is anticipated that this position will be at the Full Professor rank, qualified individuals will also be considered at the Associate Professor.
Department Required Skills : An active research stream with the ability to publish in design/technology/business journals in one or more of these areas: Product design and development, human factors/ergonomics, user-centered research, experience design, service design, branding and design strategy. An experienced leader in exploring new forms of design practice. Must possess a distinguished record in industry and/or research, teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and service.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Reporting to the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design in the College of Design, candidates should have research skills that relate to the cross-disciplinary aspects of developing and managing innovative products and services, and understanding change and trends in the marketplace. Abilities to bridge multiple disciplines across design, marketing and engineering are desired to build a research community that spans multiple colleges, diverse students, and innovative practitioners in the business community.
