Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Art + Design is positioned within the College of Design at North Carolina State University, with allied academic departments of Graphic and Industrial Design, Landscape Architecture and the School of Architecture. The College offers a Ph.D. of Design degree. The Department of Art + Design offers a Masters of Art and Design with focus areas in new media (including animation) and soft textile product design, along with two undergraduate degrees, Art + Design (studio) and Design Studies (non-studio).
Essential Job Duties: We seek a full-time tenure track faculty colleague who can offer creative and innovative leadership at the undergraduate and graduate level in an interdisciplinary program in experimental fashion, soft textile products and design entrepreneurship. The appointee should expect to participate in the leadership of the program, the development of the curriculum and strategic planning, as well as creating collaborations across the department, college and university. The appointee will also instruct advanced undergraduates in product development.
Minimum Education/Experience: Master's of Fine Arts or Design degree or equivalent and several years teaching experience.
Department Required Skills : Demonstrates exceptional potential for leadership in directing graduate scholarship and graduate committees and leadership in directing advanced undergraduate students in soft textile product development. Applicants should possess knowledge of fashion or fashion-related product history, critical contemporary culture theory, and understanding of design process, creative problem solving, strong critique skills, literacy in visual digital software and good interpersonal communication skills. We seek an enthusiastic team player to help grow the new graduate direction in fashion-related and soft textile products, facilitate student learning and scholarship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; and collaborate with department faculty. Applicant should have product design knowledge and expertise in various textile applications and/or techniques using both digital and hand methodologies.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Strong emphasis is placed on the ability to develop continuous creative scholarship, willingness and ability to pursue funded research projects, dissemination of research results, leading of graduate students in directed research or scholarship, experience in the business of Design Entrepreneurship and high quality teaching.
