Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Forest Biomaterials (FB) is part of NC State University's College of Natural Resources (CNR) and offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in Sustainable Materials and Technology and Paper Science and Engineering. We are located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and our activities include teaching, research, extension programming, continuing education, and technical services that benefit the paper and pulp, wood products, housing, biomaterials, and bioenergy industries. Our on-campus facilities include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, special research collections and state-of-the-art research and testing facilities, including the Robertson Paper & Pulp Testing Laboratory and the Hodges Wood Products Laboratory (a 21,000 sq. foot facility that supports wood products production and testing as well as research into the physical and mechanical properties of wood), and the Forest Biomaterials and Bioenergy Laboratories. FB is currently home to 20 full-time faculty, 12 active adjunct faculty, 9 staff members, 10 research associates, 40 graduate students, and more than 150 undergraduate students.
Essential Job Duties: The Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track extension and academic (teaching and research) faculty position. The incumbent will be expected to provide a combination of technology and business skills that will allow them to work with the wood products industry in areas including sustainability, entrepreneurship, innovation, and/or financial management. The successful applicant will be part of an eight-person sustainability team (three Wood Products Extension faculty and five Sustainable Materials and Technology (SMT) academic faculty). Responsibilities include developing an innovative extension program for the wood products industry and teaching one class per year in the applicant's area of expertise. The delivery methods of extension and educational materials could include workshops, seminars, webinars, demonstrations, case studies, publications, etc. It is expected that the incumbent will work with other faculty to develop funding for extension-relevant projects that can support graduate students and expand the impact of their extension program. Employment Status and Salary: This is a split appointment position and the successful candidate will be expected to divide their time between extension and academic activities. It is expected that the major portion of the incumbent's time will be spent on their extension program. Salary and start-up support will be commensurate with qualifications.
Minimum Education/Experience: A Ph.D. level degree in wood products, business, sustainability, engineering, environmental science/technology, or related area is required.
Department Required Skills : The successful applicant must have the ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, and industry. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using innovative technology transfer techniques. This position will be based in Raleigh but the incumbent must be willing to travel throughout North Carolina. The ideal candidate will have knowledge/skills/experience in one or more of the following areas related to Wood Products and similar fields: * Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology * Sustainability criteria as related to wood products such as Environmental Product Declarations or other certification processes * Wood products manufacturing processes and/or strategies * Wood products/sustainable materials entrepreneurship Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
