Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) researches, designs and implements unique programs that promote the pursuit of academic success, retention and graduation of students, with an emphasis on African American, Native American and Hispanic students. Many of the programs and services expand students’ cultural horizon while honoring their respective cultural experiences. Multicultural Student Affairs works in conjunction with a number of university departments and colleges to conduct programs related to recruitment, orientation, retention and graduation in addition to academic, personal, professional and cultural development, which foster skills and strategies for being successful at N.C. State.
Essential Job Duties: The Assistant Director will plan, organize, advise, and provide assessment for student experiences including Peer Mentoring, African American Heritage Programming, Advisory Councils, African American Student Organizations, and Cultural Awareness. The Assistant Director provides support for students, serves as an advocate for students, and is a key member of the staff operating and exercising a level of independent professional judgment, confidentially and decision making. Duties and Responsibilities: - Multicultural Student Development: Apply theory to practice concepts within the holistic approach to students. - Program Coordination and Assessment: Design, implement and evaluate programs and cultural experiences of students. Attend evening, weekend events, and additional programs as needed. - Advocacy and Mentoring: Serve as a resource for students developing the ability to identify student needs and provide support. Teach and/or prepare curriculum for the Introduction to Student Development and Peer Mentoring Course. - Campus and External Relations: The Assistant Director will help maintain and further develop collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, tribal leaders, and community partners.
Minimum Education/Experience: - Master’s degree (or higher) in Student Personnel, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education Administration or an appropriate field at the time of hire. - At least one year of work experience on a college campus or similar environment. - An understanding of how to help meet the academic, cultural and social needs of African American Students and additional multicultural student populations at a research based institution. - Familiarity with issues in higher education and student development.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Experience advising or supervising undergraduate college students
