Academic Advisor I - Environmental Sciences

Primary Function of Organization Unit: This position is located in Academic Advising Services within Academic Programs and Services in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. Working collaboratively with cross-curricular undergraduate advisors University-wide Academic Advising Services provides advising and support for a broad range of undergraduate students from every college at NC State to include undecided students, undeclared students, "re-deciding" students, Early College High School students, and other NC State students who request short-term walk-in advising services.
Essential Job Duties: This position will provide quality individual advising (both face-to-face and virtual) to Environmental Science students. The advisor will follow a developmental philosophy of advising grounded in the core values, standards, and best practices of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) standards. He/she will maintain appropriate records. This position will provide quality individual advising and student support programming for Environmental Sciences majors from their first year to graduation; provide career advising to help students identify a focal area that is aligned with their areas of interest; facilitate connections with a faculty mentor who will advise the student in their focal area; develop and implement programs that create a strong sense of community among Environmental Sciences majors, faculty and administrators; collaborate with campus constituents to help students identify experiential learning activities that complement/supplement their career goals and focal area; and help students transition both into college and into their chosen profession.
Minimum Education/Experience: Masters degree (or higher) required by time of hire.
Department Required Skills : Science background; academic advising background; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work within a team network and with a diverse array of personalities; interest in issues of energy, environment, and sustainability.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience within a comprehensive university; self starting; ability to seek help when needed; experience in arranging internships, research, and professional opportunities; knowledge of university regulations and functions; capable of administering a campus wide academic minor. The advisor must have the ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages; the ability to learn and use University databases; ability to guide students into focal areas of environmental sciences; ability to develop a network of faculty members as student mentors; and the ability to represent Environmental Sciences to students, parents, and others.
