The Director Reporting and Data Analysis provide comprehensive data to support the budget and financial analysis functions of the Office of the Vice Provost/Associate Chancellor for Budget and Resource Planning (VPBRP) which is responsible for the financial oversight of the university. The Director is responsible for the management and execution of a wide variety of operational tasks and analyses to inform institutional decision-making, policy-making, and strategic planning.

This position is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, 12-month academic professional position and reports to the Executive Associate Provost for Budget and Resource Planning. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop robust financial reports, statistics, and forecasting tools to enable multi-year planning and informed decision-making at the college and unit levels.
  • Compile and organize data for the university’s new budget model and automate the generation of annual college-level budget allocation sheets.
  • Oversee the migration and maintenance of the university’s new budget model on a web format.
  • Collaborate with VPBRP staff and college-level budget officers to build web applications and automate processes to increase operational efficiencies and effectiveness; focus on continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide technical support for the development and maintenance of the university’s operating budget.
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting of the financial position of the university and its academic and administrative units.
  • Generate standard monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports and provide technical support to various functions of the office, including deficit reporting, and tuition and ICR distribution.
  • Assist with the fiscal year-end close process; ensure closing actions of university units are completed properly within the appropriate timeframe. Prepare summaries of closing actions and reconcile final university balances for the fiscal year.
  • Partner with Assistant Provost to forecast tuition and various miscellaneous revenues and monitor and update projections throughout the fiscal year; perform variance analysis for university tuition income.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the university’s Division of Management Information (DMI) office.
  • Perform other related budget and financial analysis duties, as assigned.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree

Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, information systems, business administration, or related field

Experience

Required:

  • Five years of relevant experience
  • Experience with programming
  • Demonstrated competence in SQL
  • Familiarity with MS Office suite and Windows operating systems
  • Attentive to detail, organized, and flexible in an environment of multiple projects and shifting deadlines
  • Strong verbal, writing, and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Experience with web application development
  • Experience with:
  • MATLAB and SAS
  • Web Services and JSON
  • ASP.NET, and/or ASP.NET Core
  • Experience with interactive data visualization tools, such as Tableau and Excel, including Slicers and Pivot Tables
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating complex technical ideas to non-technical professionals
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience working with University of Illinois systems and data sources
  • Experience working with financial reporting and data structures (for example, Banner and the Enterprise Data Warehouse)

    Academic Resources

    Academic resources on campus are among the finest in the world. Students have access to thousands of computer terminals in classrooms, residence halls, and campus libraries for use in classroom instruction, study, and research.

    Research

    Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

    Undergraduate Education

    The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

    Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

    The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

    Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

    The Arts

    A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

    Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
