Position Description

In collaboration with head coaches and athletic administrative staff, assistant coaches plan practices to teach, encourage and develop student athlete skills and game techniques. Responsible for developing in athletes an understanding of proper nutrition, personal health and safe strength development. Teaches 2-3 physical education courses annually. Identifies and recruits athletically and academically qualified student-athletes, scouts opponents, manages team travel, organizes community service activities and maintains parent and alumni communication. Coaches will demonstrate commitment to the W&L philosophy by emphasizing academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field.

STATUS:  Full-Time, 12 Month, With Benefits
WORK HOURS:  8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with frequent evening and weekend hours as required by sport
FLSA:  Exempt
MINIMUM PAY:  $27,000/annually

ESSENTIAL AND RELATED FUNCTIONS

  • Coaches team members individually and in groups, and demonstrates game techniques. Manages designated skill development areas or groups of positions. Develops and recommends strategy, teaches theoretical skill and position assignments.
  • Plans coaching and practice sessions in accordance with Conference and university regulations.
  • Teaches 2-3 physical education courses annually as required for student graduation criteria. Substitute teaches as needed when requested by Head Coach and Director of PE.
  • Promotes the athletics program and specific sport through community events, camps and public speaking. Teaches athletic skills and development through local youth programming.
  • Mentors and advises student athletes on personal health, strength training, and nutrition. 
  • Recruits quality prospective student-athletes and ensures timely submission of their academic records for admissions. 
  • Ensures compliance with all Association, Conference, and University rules by athletes and supporting staff.
  • Communicates consistently with head-coaches, administration, and peers about program goals, status, and needs.
  • Schedules and manages team travel, including lodging, transportation and meal arrangements in accordance with budgetary restrictions.   
  • Serves as an event manager for home contests.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Organizes situations or events with the aim of efficiently and effectively using the University's resources (e.g., workspace, equipment, tools, etc.). Makes an effort to involve others in planning and decision-making (i.e., seeks their input and commitment).
  • Technical Skills - Demonstrates knowledge of professional-level concepts, applies skills over a broad scope of work and is adept at handling complex tasks and problems independently. Understands how functions and services across the University are interdependent and how they impact goals. Encourages continuous improvement of work methods and techniques by sharing success stories and lessons learned. Actively reviews development opportunities and seeks to learn about relevant tools, systems or technologies.
  • Results Focused - Adapts to other people's approach (e.g., work habits, learning styles, etc.). Keeps focused on goals despite challenges and helps others achieve their own by removing obstacles. Demonstrates initiative to accept new challenges and learn new procedures. Consistently thinks ahead, prepares and is able to implement contingency plans to avoid problems.
  • Communication and Relations - Able to effectively adapt communication style, method and level of detail to the needs of others. Consistently treats others in a manner that demonstrates a keen awareness and understanding of their needs. Acts as a role model by being able to work comfortably with people of differing work-styles, backgrounds, cultures, ages and gender.
  • Teamwork/Team Development - Sets personal and professional goals that support broader work group goals. Listens attentively to ideas and concerns of others and makes others feel heard and appreciated. Gives credit and recognition to work group member's contributions when objectives are met, and makes suggestions to enhance work efficiencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is required and a master's degree and collegiate playing experience is preferred. Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field. Role models appropriate behavior and conduct to support the image and reputation of the athletics program. Strong understanding of various coaching techniques and a willingness to learn new methods of instruction. Must possess a valid drivers license.

  • Recruiting experience
  • Competencies in use of the full Adobe Suite
  • Competencies in video software including use of Hudl

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Working Conditions

The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
