Loyola University Chicago, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher, with expertise in the areas of Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, and behavioral neuroscience. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on performance. The researcher will participate in a NIH-funded project in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Cavanaugh, which uses behavioral, molecular, and genetic approaches to understand the neuronal circuitry underlying behavioral rhythms in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The position is jointly funded by Loyola’s Department of Biology. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who are interested in gaining teaching experience while conducting cutting-edge research.

The postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Cavanaugh to investigate the neurobiological basis of circadian behavioral rhythms. The incumbent will be involved in several different aspects of the project, including collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts, delivering presentations, and mentoring students. Experimental techniques will include brain dissection and immunohistochemistry, behavioral analysis of rest:activity and feeding rhythms, and functional imaging of brain activity. In addition to labwork, the postdoc will be required to teach 1-2 departmental courses each semester in the Department of Biology.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in neurobiology or a related field. A background in working with Drosophila and experience with functional brain imaging techniques (such as calcium imaging) are desirable but not required.
