POSITION:        ASSISTANT DEAN (SOCIAL WORKER)                       

LOCATION:      OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENT

Reporting to the Dean of Students and assisting with the overall operation of the Office of the Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean will serve as the liaison to students who need assistance to cope with personal and psychological issues that affect their school performance, behavior and socialization. Through one-on-one and/or group sessions, the Student Advocate will address issues relevant to the University population, such as the transition to college, academic standards, school attendance, food and housing insecurities, financial assistance, drug/alcohol abuse, and social conduct.  S/he will assist faculty and staff in dealing with behavioral issues by communicating with students to find the causes of their distress and/or sponsoring related workshops.  In addition and as appropriate or necessary, the Student Advocate will provide information to students for outside support services or agencies to help them deal with their economic, emotional or physical challenges.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Counsels and interviews students with regard to personal, academic, and social problems, making necessary referrals to appropriate on-campus support services, such as Counseling and Psychological Services, the Women’s Center, the Office of Specialized Services, and/or the Children’s Learning Center (CLC). Researches and refers students as needed to appropriate off-campus community resources in response to crisis situations such as domestic abuse, food or housing insecurities, as well as how to access to child care or health care, etc. Conducts follow up with students to ensure that their situations have improved and to evaluate the services rendered as appropriate and effective. Reviews and enforces relevant student polices; absence, academic standards, disciplinary, etc.; assists with remediation by providing counseling, treatment plans, or workshops. Oversees the Tobacco-Free and Alcohol and Other Drugs /advisory board and task force and develops all related reports. Evaluates and makes initial decisions about student requests for readmission. Interviews and counsels students who are contemplating withdrawal and/or leaves of absence from the University. Recommends the creation and revision of student-related university policies, practices and procedures. Investigates and prepares cases with regard to the Student Code of Conduct; conducts and adjudicates disciplinary procedures and assigns appropriate sanctions. Assists with the development and coordination of activities related to students’ academic, personal and social success. Collects data, prepares and distributes statistical reports regarding key areas; tracks student issues/progress to identify patterns in behavior and to evaluate/analyze trends in order to make related programming suggestions. Selects, trains, and supervises peer leaders who will function as the student support system out of the Office of the Dean of Students. Coordinates the development of public relations materials relating to specifically assigned activities. Participates in special projects as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or the Vice President of Student Affairs.

REQUIREMENTS: A record of effective interpersonal communication, consensus-building, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. High degree of initiative and independent judgment.

EDUCATION: Possesses a Bachelor's degree with a Certified Social Worker certification (CSW) or a Masters’ degree in Social Work (preferred) with a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) license.

EXPERIENCE: Possesses a minimum of five to seven years of post-secondary experience in professional student affairs/student development work.

Exhibits evidence of the ability to establish rapport with students, as well as a working relationship with faculty and staff. Demonstrates the ability to exercise independent, sound, and analytical/diagnostic judgments. Exhibits the flexibility to manage complex roles which require a broad base of knowledge. Exhibits evidence of the ability and willingness to work long hours, multi-task, and maintain a positive attitude.
