About the Dean of Student Office

The Office of the Dean of Students assists all students, graduate and undergraduate, from their initial orientation to the College through successful completion of their academic and personal goals. The Dean of Students staff advocates for student needs, acts as liaison between students and academic departments, and provides support and challenges designed to enhance personal growth, as well as a sense of personal authority and responsibility in each student.

 

Parent & Family Programs facilitates and advocates for the role of family involvement in community development and individual student success. Our programs provide resources and activities that connect families with each other and with the W&M community. The activities, programs, services, and regulations of the university are all planned with the following objectives in mind.

 

Parent and Family Programs

Parent & Family Programs welcome parents and families to the Tribe; creates opportunities for meaningful involvement with the campus community; connects parents and families with one another; informs and educates parents and families about resources, critical issues and topics relevant to student success.Vision: Cultivate a lifelong relationship among families and William & Mary that supports and encourages student success.

 

Assistant Director Position

The Assistant Director assists the Director of Parent & Family Programs in the management of day-to-day operations and long-term planning of the office. The Assistant Director is responsible for event management for all population-specific (currently 50 welcome receptions and targeted events) and campus-wide events (Family Orientation and Family Weekend), including the planning, promotion, implementation, and assessment. The Assistant Director also develops and manages the communication strategy for the office, selecting and supervising student interns, and developing relationships with campus partners and Parent & Family Council partners. The Assistant Director serves as an important team member of the Dean of Students Office staff focused on providing information about policies and procedures to students, and communicating with faculty and parents when appropriate.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

A successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in College Student Affairs Administration, Counseling, Communications or related field; successful program planning and implementation experience; superior presentation skills; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; a high level of proficiency with social and electronic media; demonstrated event management and event organizational abilities; excellent counseling, problem solving, and referral skills; computer and technological skills; and the ability to work within a diverse setting with faculty, student affairs staff, students, and family members.

 

It is highly desirable for the Assistant Director to have at least three years’ experience working in a higher education setting including at least one year of full-time experience, particularly in the areas of event planning, public relations, communications, student management, strategic implementations of new programming and emerging and best practices in social media. Prior experience working in the area of New Student/First-Year Experience/Parent & Family Programs is highly desirable.The ideal candidate would demonstrate a desire to work with our family volunteer communities to welcome parents and families to William & Mary family; create opportunities for meaningful involvement with the campus community; connect families with one another; and educate families about valuable resources, critical issues and topics relevant to student success.
