Serving 3,800 students, Valpo offers a thorough grounding in the liberal arts as well as professional training and graduate study, helping students find their own paths to lifelong personal, spiritual, and professional growth. Consistently achieving national recognition for best teaching and value and as one of the best universities in the Midwest, Valpo prepares students for lives of leadership and service in a global society. Together, we seek truth, serve generously, and cultivate hope.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) serves as the senior university officer providing leadership and management for co-curricular student life programs, including the Career Center; Dean of Students Office (Residential Life, Student Conduct, Fraternity/Sorority Life, First-Year and Commuter Student Programming, New Student Orientation, Leadership Programs, and Volunteer Programs); Harre Union and Student Activities; Office of Multicultural Programs; Student Counseling Services (Counseling Center, Office of Alcohol and Drug Education, Sexual Assault Awareness and Facilitative Education Office); and Student Health Center. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to strategically review the current organizational structure, staff functions, and staffing levels for efficiency and effectiveness. The VPSA will advance and enhance a robust student life experience with programs, services, activities, and facilities to maximize student engagement, participation, community development, and leadership opportunities. Serving as an advocate for students, the VPSA collaborates across departments and divisions to promote a fully-integrated student experience as outlined by the holistic education initiatives contained in the current University Strategic Plan and University Student Learning Outcomes; provides visionary student affairs leadership; promotes, supports, and strengthens the University’s diversity and inclusion efforts; and engages with current students. In addition, the VPSA will contribute to sustaining successful university retention and graduation rates through use of data, research, programs, and special interventions. As a strategic leader, the VPSA serves as an active and valued member of the University’s leadership team, with appointments on both President’s Council and Provost’s Council. The VPSA will manage an operating budget of $5.5 million.

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate with substantive, progressively responsible leadership experience in student affairs. Proven effectiveness at a Dean or Assistant/Associate Vice President level in student affairs or student success areas is desirable. Candidates must also possess deep experience and knowledge of current trends in student affairs management and implementation of best practices. The successful candidate should also have a successful history of supervising and mentoring staff, enhancing student life on a residential campus, and working effectively across the campus community. In addition, the VPSA must have experience providing responsive assistance to students and the university in crisis situations and a proven ability to create and maintain a culture responsive to student concerns. Essential qualities for the VPSA include leadership experience in student development and learning, university-wide strategic planning experience, extensive risk management experience with a working understanding of applicable higher education law, and knowledge of metrics to assess student-learning outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, and must demonstrate effective leadership, strategic planning, writing, and intercultural skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate openness to and support of the Lutheran identity of the university, and be sensitive to issues of spiritual formation among students.

History

Established in 1859, Valparaiso University is a comprehensive, independent Lutheran university and Northwest Indiana’s oldest institution of higher learning.

campus aerial

In its more than 150-year history, Valparaiso University has passed through three distinct phases. Founded by Methodists as an institution pioneering coeducation, the Valparaiso Male and Female College was forced by the reverses of the Civil War to close its doors in 1871. It was revived in 1873 by an enterprising educator, Henry Baker Brown, as the Northern Indiana Normal School, renamed Valparaiso College in 1900, and rechartered in 1906 as Valparaiso University.

Despite its decades of success, the University again experienced financial hardship as the United States entered World War I. The Lutheran University Association, a group of clergy and church laity who saw a bright future for the University, purchased it in 1925, ushering in the modern era of Valpo’s history. Distinguished by its Lutheran heritage of scholarship, freedom, and faith, Valparaiso University continues to fulfill the dreams of these modern founders.

Location

The University’s 350-acre campus is located one hour southeast of Chicago, 15 miles from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and within walking distance of downtown Valparaiso, Indiana, where you can enjoy more than 30 restaurants, cafés, and ice cream shops as well as independent boutiques, entertainment, and cultural experiences.

Enrollment

Valpo is home to more than 3,100 undergraduate and graduate students hailing from nearly all regions of the United States and more than 30 other countries.

Academics Meterology Class

Valpo offers more than 70 undergraduate degree programs and interdisciplinary options throughout five undergraduate colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing and Health Professions, and Christ College — The Honors College. The Graduate School offers more than 20 graduate programs that are fully integrated into three academic colleges and hold the appropriate accreditation in their field.

Students complement their classroom experiences with applied, practical experiences to prepare for their careers. They work closely with their peers, are mentored by accomplished faculty, and reach across disciplines, putting theory into practice. Whatever the degree path, students receive an innovative, rigorous education within the liberal arts tradition and learn to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems with creative solutions.
