Associate Professor of Instruction, Ceramics

The Ceramics Program at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty appointment. The initial contract will be for three years and may be renewable based on successful performance and the needs of the program.

The Ceramics Program encompasses a wide range of philosophies and practices ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, including vessel production, sculpture, installation and digital fabrication. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of ceramic materials and processes, preferably including 3-D modeling and digital fabrication; and have demonstrated ability to position clay within contemporary art and craft discourses. A professional exhibition record is required. Candidates who can expand beyond the traditional canon of ceramics to include a broader social, political, cultural, or artistic context are particularly desirable. The ideal candidate will be influential in shaping the future of the discipline.

In addition to being an accomplished artist, the successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching, as well as evidence of successful experience with administration and program management, and leadership potential. The position requires teaching a variety of ceramics courses at the undergraduate and, potentially, graduate level. The workload is comprised of six courses per year, administrative and program management responsibilities, and service to the program, department, and college.

Since 1935, Tyler School of Art has offered students the combination of a world-renowned faculty and the resources of Temple University, a large, urban research institution. Tyler’s programs encompass a wide range of areas in the study of art, design, art history, art education, and architecture. In each program, students work in small learning communities, while also benefitting from state-of-the-art facilities, a rigorous curriculum, and a large, diverse campus community.

RANK: Assistant or Associate Professor

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have an MFA, professional exhibition record, demonstrated teaching excellence, a record of successful program administration and management, and an ability to communicate and work effectively, collegially, and collaboratively with students, faculty and administrators. A minimum of three years of full time college-level teaching experience, or the equivalent, is preferred.
