Job Details

The role of adjunct faculty in the communications management program is to teach students in the six Master's concentrations. Our courses are offered in three main formats including lecture, online, and hybrid. You will be provided with a pre-designed Canvas "course container." The course container will provide certain elements that you may not change including course title and description, as well as course learning outcomes and the course gradebook. The course container will also provide a syllabus template for you to design your course syllabus. University College works with Baseline Faculty Expectations which fall into four categories: before classes begin, course management, and course engagement, and communication. These are to help apply best practices in teaching. We hire adjunct faculty by course term based on need. For this reason, it is important to identify specific course you are qualified to teach in the supplemental questions.

The stipend for teaching a 4-credit course is as follows:

1-2 students = $500 per student

3-8 students = $2,400

9-12 students = $3,000

13-17 students = $3,500

18-25 students = $4,000

The stipend amount is determined by the enrollment at the end of week three of the course. The Academic Director may cancel courses that do not achieve minimum enrollment.

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

Before classes begin

  • Prepare and post course syllabus using the University College syllabus template.
  • Perform updates to course containers in Canvas including lectures, activities, and discussion questions.

Course Management

  • Adhere to our learning management system (LMS), Canvas, use policies.
  • Work with students to address student performance.
  • Set clear expectations regarding assignments, grading, and classroom decorum.
  • Uphold academic integrity.
  • Uphold applicable Turabian guidelines and University College format and style requirements.

Course Engagement

  • Be professional, present, and engaged in the course and with students.
  • Provide specific and timely feedback connected with grades within the LMS.
  • Use career-relevant and current-event examples to make material applicable to students' lives.
  • Utilize and engage diverse perspectives in teaching materials and practices.
  • Incorporate active, outcomes-based, hands-on activities that are collaborative, practice-based, and/or student led.

Communication

  • Maintain professional communication and interaction with all members of the DU and University College community.
  • Reach out proactively about any concerns.
  • Respond promptly and meet deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices, teaching principles and best practices, course development skills, multimedia integration, and learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to select the most relevant instructional multimedia and/or tech tools, and write effective copy, texts, audio and video scripts.
  • Knowledge of and experience with higher education in general and adult learners in particular.
  • Knowledge of learning management tools and HTML.
  • Proven excellent project management skills
  • Information analysis and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups.
  • Strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to adapt priorities and focus.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in communications or related field or a Master's degree and communications or marketing industry experience.
  • Successful college/university teaching experience with adults.
  • Work or academic experience congruent with the content of a course or courses offered within our communication management program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a communication related field or a terminal degree and communication industry experience.
  • Recognition of professional accomplishment in an area of expertise related to course or courses offered within our communication management program.
  • Publication in the communication field.
  • Professional presentations related to the communication field.
  • Licensing and/or certification by professional organizations.
  • Completion of an education/training program on adult learning or internship with a mentor.
