University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Vice Dean to oversee Information Technology and Systems (ITS). The new Vice Dean will join one of the largest online institutions in the world, serving a global student population. Working adults, military personnel, and other students around the globe are achieving their academic goals through UMUC's innovative educational options, including online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends.

Specific responsibilities include:

The Vice Dean will demonstrate a commitment to serving the needs of working adult and military students, and should possess the requisite skills to drive curricular change, best teaching practices, organizational process improvements, and other innovations to serve the needs of our students. The Vice Dean will be responsible for ensuring that faculty design curriculum that is career relevant and based on UMUC learning models and best pedagogical practices. The Vice Dean will actively employ data on the assessment of student learning and program quality to inform continuous improvements to programs and teaching.

As a member of a senior leadership team that reports directly to the Dean, the Vice Dean will be adept at collaborating with peers to address shared needs and solve common problems. The Vice Dean should also effectively liaise with other units across the university to advance School and UMUC priorities.

  • Ensure that all department personnel understand UMUC’s mission to support open access education for adult learners and maintain the highest standard of customer service and support
  • Manage Academic Specialists, and Administrative Staff who support eighteen (18) graduate programs totaling over 3,000 plus annual enrollments in the department
  • Provide overall accountability for the academic quality and workplace relevance of ITS programs
  • Ensure that the highest standards of academic integrity are maintained and that staff, faculty, and students understand their roles and responsibilities in maintaining academic integrity
  • Establish accountability for regular and ongoing review and support of faculty teaching
  • Provide oversight, direction, and support for faculty to practice regular and effective communication with faculty
  • Provide faculty with ongoing opportunities for engagement in curricular initiatives via program chairs
  • Support program chair use of data--including but not limited to learning outcomes assessment data--to drive decisions and make ongoing improvements to courses and programs
  • Lead department staff in the support and advancement of school and university priorities
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Required education & experience: An earned Master’s degree, from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning in computer or information technology or systems, or related field; understanding of and experience in the use of information systems and technology in various industries and sectors, including computer science, software and systems engineering, computer/cloud networking and architecture, and data sciences; seven (7) years in higher education administration, including at least five (5) years of demonstrated ability leading, directing, supervising, motivating, and inspiring others; and the ability to manage a diverse portfolio of academic offerings.

Preferred education & experience: An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning in computer or information science, technology, or information systems. Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to foster and develop internal and external relationships to enhance further a collaborative academic community; an understanding of best practices in adult education, learning outcomes assessment, competency-based education, developmental education, and applications of educational technology; teaching experience at the graduate level, working with adult learners; excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to use information technology; strong analytical skills; and the ability to use data to inform decisions.
