The Marist / Health Quest School of Medicine (“SOMed”) seeks an Executive Director to join its team in a period of dramatic development and expansion.  The Executive Director will be accountable for implementing the multi-year business plan developed by Marist College and Health Quest that aims to achieve the organizations’ combined vision for the Marist / Health Quest SOMed.  Leadership who have developed that vision expect to submit an application for preliminary accreditation to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (“LCME”) by Spring/Summer 2020, and anticipate the first class of 60 students to matriculate in July of 2022.  The Executive Director will manage a diverse set of constituencies – including, but not limited to executives, faculty, and staff – through the formative stages of establishing a new medical school.  The position will report to the new Dean (anticipated to be hired in 2019/2020) and will function in a matrixed reporting structure with both direct reports as well as the need to effectively coordinate with peers from both institutions and across various administrative functions.  Prior to the Dean’s hiring, the Executive Director will report to both the Executive Vice President of Marist College and the Chief Medical Operations Officer from Health Quest.   

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a senior leader with an upward career trajectory – preferably in the areas of healthcare or higher education. He or she must possess an entrepreneurial and proactive spirit with a comfort level in a start-up environment.  The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree (MD, PhD, EdD, MBA, JD, MPA, MPH, or other health profession) with at least ten (10) years of experience working in an academic and/or clinical environment.  The Executive Director candidate will need to demonstrate a track record of operational and financial/budget management success. This position includes a potential opportunity to assume an operational and/or financial leadership role within the executive administration of the SOMed after the Dean is hired and the school is officially launched.  The successful candidate will demonstrate her or his ability to lead diverse teams, while addressing complex challenges and cultivating shared goals.  S/he should possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills with demonstrated success as a collaborative manager able to lead a diverse team comprised of individuals with varying and complementary skills.  High-level verbal and written skills with an ability to communicate effectively at all levels throughout the two organizations – including board members, executives, faculty, and staff members – is a necessity.

Position Details

Some of the critical features of this role encompass the following: 

  • Coordinate administrative services and operations for the development of the Marist / Health Quest SOMed and between Marist and Health Quest;
  • Oversee overall budgetary and fiscal management;
  • Oversee the recruitment and management of SOMed staff and faculty specifically those involved in creating the infrastructure of the school;
  • Oversee LCME Data Collection Instrument development and submission in Spring/Summer 2020, as well as preparation for the LCME preliminary accreditation survey visit in Summer/Fall 2020 or Winter 2021;
  • Facilitate the development of the curriculum, facilities planning, and medical education building construction;
  • Facilitate the development of a brand building/marketing and philanthropy strategy;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

The School of Medicine will seek approvals from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the New York State Education Department and Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Once fully staffed and accredited (by July 2021), the School of Medicine is expected to begin actively recruiting students, with the first class of 60 matriculating in July 2022. By 2028, that class size projects to increase to 120.
