Job Details

The Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Urban Public Policy and Governance. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence July 1, 2019. 

Applicants must have must have a Ph.D. in Geography, Planning, Urban Studies, or a cognate discipline at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Applicants will have a research focus in one or more of the following areas: urban public policy, local government institutions and policy-making, municipal finance, and city and regional planning and governance. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, and be able to communicate effectively as an undergraduate and graduate teacher. 

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, externally funded research program. The successful candidate must have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishment and provide evidence of excellence in research, as demonstrated by publications in leading academic journals and/or with leading academic presses, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades for work in the field, and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing. They also must demonstrate excellence in teaching and emerging excellence as a graduate supervisor through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier including a teaching statement, teaching materials including sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Demonstrated commitment to experiential learning is an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to teach large introductory and senior undergraduate courses in the City Governance Concentration of the interdisciplinary City Studies programs in the Department of Human Geography. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The appointment is in the Department of Human Geography at UTSC. The successful candidate also will become a member of the Tri-campus graduate department best suited to their area of scholarly focus, and will teach and supervise graduate students in that department.
