Job Details

The Department of Biology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University invites applications for a full-time term position starting August 2019. Ph.D. in a biological discipline is required. The anticipated teaching assignment includes lectures and labs in Foundations of Biology (BIOL 101), which gives an overview of the fundamental themes of biology within the context of a specific biological topic, and lectures and labs in Intermediate Cell Biology and Genetics (BIOL 201), which covers biological molecules, cell structure, cell signaling, metabolism, and classical and molecular genetics. Therefore, candidates with previous experience teaching biology in lecture and laboratory settings are preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the education of undergraduates in a liberal arts environment as well as the potential to engage students and teach creatively in introductory biology courses. The candidate is welcome, but not required, to maintain a research program.

The College of Saint Benedict (CSB), a liberal arts college for women, and Saint John's University (SJU), a liberal arts college for men, are located in the central lakes area of Minnesota, surrounded by more than 3,000 acres of pristine forests, prairies, and lakes. The campuses are minutes away from St. Cloud, an increasingly diverse regional center with a population of over 100,000, and 70 miles from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Some CSB/SJU faculty and staff choose to reside locally, while others commute from the Twin Cities. Both St. Cloud and the Twin Cities offer a wide range of fine arts, cultural, dining, recreational, and sporting opportunities.

CSB/SJU are Catholic colleges in the Benedictine tradition enlivened by values of community, hospitality, stewardship, and justice. The schools are dedicated to cultivating an equitable, inclusive community founded on respect for all persons. Students, staff and faculty from many diverse belief systems and backgrounds collectively bring a rich dimension to the academic, cultural, and religious experience at CSB/SJU. We welcome faculty who devote themselves with passion and integrity to their disciplines and to a transformative education of their students.

With a total enrollment of approximately 3600 students, faculty members develop relationships with students in small classroom settings and have opportunities to work closely with students on research projects, experiential learning experiences, and study abroad programs. Recent initiatives to create a dynamic general education curriculum and to develop plans for a new teaching and learning center demonstrate strong institutional support for faculty development.

CSB/SJU offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits program.

Our Institutional Commitment to Diversity

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University believe that an excellent liberal arts education requires an understanding and appreciation of cultural difference and that everyone deserves to feel safe and morally valued. To that end, we challenge our own practices and systems. Our commitment to an inclusive environment is incorporated into all decision-making processes. We dedicate ourselves to cultivating an equitable, inclusive community founded on respect for all persons. We commit to:

1.Foster a learning and working environment that reflects respect for all persons

2.Make decisions in accordance with our commitment to inclusivity

3.Promote inclusion via self-reflection and professional development

4.Respond to the common call of Catholic social justice teaching and Benedictine values to dismantle systems of oppression

5.Share and engage these practices in all that we do in the classroom, across our campuses, and in the greater world

Applications are accepted online at http://employment.csbsju.edu. Applicants must submit:

1.Letter of application

2.Statement of teaching philosophy. In your statement or in other application materials, please share how you will integrate diversity and support inclusion for all students in the classroom.

3.Evidence of teaching effectiveness, for example: course evaluations, examples of course materials developed by candidate, peer or student testimonials, or other materials.

4.Curriculum vitae

5.Names and contact information of three references

6.Copies of all transcripts

CSB, for women, and SJU, for men, are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. They share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth and cultural and athletic involvement. The combined enrollment of more than 3,800 students makes CSB and SJU the largest of the nation's liberal arts colleges.

CSB/SJU are committed to the development of the whole person, meeting the unique needs of both women and men in single-gender and co-educational experiences.

The Catholic character of CSB and SJU is shaped by the Benedictine communities which founded the colleges in the 19th century and continues to foster Benedictine Catholic values in the academic, spiritual and social life of the colleges. Today, Benedictine women and men remain actively involved in teaching and administration, and their prayerful presence in community life provides the stable sense of home for which both CSB and SJU are so well known.
