Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty and Program Director. This person will teach a variety of GIS courses as well as work with the community, GIS professionals, and related COCC programs. In all areas of service, the GIS Program Director and faculty will strive to maintain the GIS program’s reputation and to help students achieve their educational and professional goals. The GIS program has been around for 20+ years and is a premier 2-year program.

Terms of Employment

•Full-time Faculty, 1.0 FTE, Exempt. This is a fulltime, tenure-track probationary position commencing September 2019. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
•$49,350 – $58,850 per year depending on experience.
•Represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
•Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus.
•Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
•Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
•May include travel throughout the College district

Essential Functions:

ESSENTIAL FACULTY FUNCTIONS

1.Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcomes. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses (i.e. Bend, Madras, Prineville, Redmond, online, or other).
2.Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, transfer, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
3.Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
4.Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and academic program review.
5.Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
6.Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
7.Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
8.Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS SPECIFIC TO Assistant Professor and Program Director for GIS

Teaching and Advising
•Hold a minimum of five office hours per week as required for student help sessions.
•Teach lectures and labs in a broad range of GIS curriculum. Classes may be held during the day, evening, or weekends, and may be held online or on multiple campuses.
•Provide academic student advising and assistance to prospective GIS students.
•Work with students to provide necessary documentation for licensure and/or certification exams.
•Serve as first contact for GIS student program concerns.
•Coordinate practical experience in off-campus facilities and evaluate student performance.
•Cooperate with other College personnel to assist students with career planning, job placement, national certification readiness and follow-up studies.

Administrative
•Monitor the GIS budget.
•Prepare supplies or equipment purchase requests.
•Recommend hiring of instructors and teaching assistants to the CIS Chair.
•Orient and evaluate PT instructors, as needed, for GIS courses.
•Verify the accuracy of GIS staff time sheets.
•Participate in Career Technical Education (CTE) Council meetings.
•Recruit and collaborate with community partners (advisory committee members) and convene an annual meeting with recorded minutes and/or action items.
•Assist the college in meeting any grant requirements related to the GIS program.

Curriculum
•Maintain the curriculum and course standards as expected by the department and national standards.
•Review and update the yearly catalog copy and program descriptions; Assist in maintaining program website materials.
•Assess GIS program/course outcomes regularly and develop strategies for continual improvement.
•Anticipate and initiate new curriculum/courses by completing required documents for the curriculum committee
•Annually review and select textbooks for each of the courses and complete book orders for each term
•Work with Enrollment Services to coordinate GIS program admissions.
•Prepare and propose the GIS class schedule each term.
•Market the GIS program and recruit potential students; Take part in school or community open houses or degree fairs.
•Perform other essential duties and tasks, as assigned.

Support Partner Programs
•Work collaboratively with the program director for Aviation and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in…
oplanning and developing new GIS courses that are utilized by aviation and/or UAS students.
oscheduling GIS courses, term by term, that are utilized by aviation and/or UAS students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1.Thorough knowledge in the field of taught discipline and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
2.Provides quality instruction to students in assigned courses, including, but not limited to Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, ArcGIS, Geodatabase Design, Computer Cartography, Spatial Data Collection, Data Conversion and Documentation, Analysis of Spatial Data, GIS Customization, Remote Sensing and GIS Capstone.
3.Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
4.Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
5.Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
6.Ability to effectively use Microsoft office suite, various course management systems, technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses and other technology used in the instruction setting.
7.Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.

9.Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.

12.Thorough, current knowledge in the field of Health Information Technology and commitment to remain current with the changes resulting from national healthcare policy.
13.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and participate in various aspects of program coordination.
14.Specific knowledge of current technology related to Health Informatics (i.e. EHR)
15.Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements for Teaching Transfer Credit Courses:
Master’s Degree in the subject area or closely related to that of primary teaching assignment from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of the primary teaching assignment.

Minimum Requirements for Teaching Geographic Information Systems Courses:
1.A degree or credential appropriate in the field of primary teaching assignment (AAS, BS, or MS depending on the program) and/or demonstrated competencies in professional fields; or instructor has a minimum of 24-quarter hours of credit in the field of the primary teaching assignment.
2.Knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of the teaching of Geographic Information systems.
3.Minimum 2 years’ experience with ArcGIS Desktop, ArcPro and/or ArcGIS Online software.
4.Experience with Global Positioning receivers (GPS) and associated software for data management.
5.Minimum 2 years’ experience using GIS in industry, government of academics.

Special Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree or higher in GeoSciences, Geographic Information Systems or Geography
•One or more years of teaching experience within a geographic information systems (or similar) program
•Possess GIS Professional (GISP) Certification
•Experience with aviation, either Private Pilot or small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Part 107 Certification.

Organization

Central Oregon Community College, the oldest two-year college in Oregon, provides comprehensive college services to the residents of its 10,000-square-mile district.

COCC offers two-year associate degrees, transfer/lower division programs, career and technical education degrees and certificates, developmental courses, continuing education and community learning classes, industry-specific training programs, and business management assistance.

The College's main campus is located on the western edge of Bend, a city known for its natural beauty and its proximity to diverse recreational opportunities. The location affords spectacular views of the mountains from nearly every point on the 201-acre campus. The Redmond Campus, located 20 miles north on 25 acres near the Redmond Municipal Airport, offers all of the courses necessary to earn an associate degree. In addition, it is the home of the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center.

Thanks to a successful 2009 bond measure, COCC has constructed campus facilities in Madras and Prineville, opening the two campuses in 2011. In Bend, new health careers and science centers opened in 2012 as well as a technology center in Redmond.

A branch of Oregon State University is located on the Bend campus. OSU-Cascades offers upper division and graduate programs on the COCC campus.
