Overview

Princeton University's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is in the process of growing a High Performance Computing (HPC) group which will play a leading role in further strengthening and enhancing PPPL's world-leading research program in fusion and plasma science. The advent of the DOE Exascale Computing Project (ECP) and PPPL's leading role in it provides a great opportunity to develop simulation codes that will exlpoit fully the power of petascale and exascale computing platforms, and even those that lie beyond. This group currently has multiple research positions available in computational science, aimed at advancing the physics understanding of fusion and plasma science.

Responsibilities

Opportunities exist for highly qualified applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and computational physicists with interest in advanced simulation. A record of nationally recognized, distinguished research accomplishments and intellectual independence in the development of new mathematical algorithms, enhancing application performance in modern computing platforms, and/or software infrastructure to support large-scale data management and data science is necessary. Experience in computational plasma physics or fluid dynamics is desirable but not necessary. (S)he would be expected to be a leader of the HPC group, including computational aspects of whole device modeling of fusion plasmas, which is part of the ECP, and other synergistic computational projects under the auspices of the Scientific Discovery with Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program.

Qualifications

The successful candidate would be normally expected to have at least five years experience after the successful completion of a PhD degree.

These projects are strongly collaborative and require teamwork with applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and plasma physicist within PPPL as well as other national laboratories and Universities.
