The Department of Education at Concordia College invites applications for a position in English as Second Language. This full-time, tenure eligible position (rank dependent on qualifications) has been created in conjunction with a newly approved licensure program in ESL, and is supported by a permanent endowment to the college given by the family of R. Warren and Wilma J. Kvenild Pierson. We welcome applications from dynamic, innovative professionals with fresh perspectives on educator preparation and ESL programming and who have the energy and capacity to help build a new program. Additionally, we seek a candidate who will uphold the long tradition of experiential language learning at Concordia College and Concordia Language Villages and will aim to collaborate with the office of Global Learning and Language Villages to provide meaningful experiences for students, including, but not limited to participation in English language learning camps in Tanzania and Haiti.

Teaching Responsibilities:

12 credit hours per semester (three courses, or the equivalent in supervision per semester)
Possible courses may include: Elementary and Secondary Methods of English as a Second Language, Introduction to Linguistics, Secondary Language Acquisition, Secondary English Language Arts methods, as well as some general education courses and student teaching supervision.
Possible graduate level teaching in the Master of Education in World Language Instruction, or other graduate teaching.
Potential for leading international or domestic student travel.

Minimum Qualifications: 
Sympathy with the mission of the college and with the ideals of liberal arts education.
Earned terminal degree, Ed.D/ Ph.D. (or ABD with a scheduled defense date), with expertise in English as a Second Language, ESOL, TESOL, Linguistics, or Second Language Acquisition, or related fields.
Evidence of successful teaching experience of at least 3 years at the P-12 level with minimum of one year experience in English as a Second Language in the United States
Evidence of potential for successful teaching and scholarship in higher education

Preferred Qualifications:

Earned terminal degree (Ed.D, or PhD) in field related to Education by start of 2019-20 academic year.
Lived, or professional experience within diverse US school communities
Experience with both pre-service and in-service teachers
Eligible for licensure as an ESL teacher in Minnesota
Interest or experience working with graduate students and in-service teachers
Ability to teach courses supporting the general education requirements of the college, or of the education program
Fluency in a language other than English
Demonstrated commitment to providing transformative experiences for students both within and outside of the classroom
Interest in working collaboratively with the office of Global Learning and Concordia Language Villages. Current programming involves English Language Camps in Tanzania and Haiti, however opportunities in other locations with need are possible.
Innovative, entrepreneurial mindset
Interest in, or experience teaching online courses
Experience in teaching in immersion settings

Going Places

Within six months of graduation, 96 percent of recently surveyed new Concordia graduates reported being employed or attending graduate school. Concordia students have achieved an 88 percent acceptance rate into medical school (in 10 years surveyed). Ninety-three percent of Concordia graduates applying for law school are accepted.
