Position Title: Faculty Director of the Duchossois Family Institute
Position Type: Faculty
Division/School: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES DIVISION
Hiring Unit: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES DIVISION
Position Description: Faculty Director of the Duchossois Family Institute

The University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division (BSD) invites applications for the position of inaugural Director of the Duchossois Family Institute: Harnessing the Microbiome and Immunity for Human Health (https://tinyurl.com/ycgntas9). We seek a PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent scientist who will establish a productive research laboratory and lead a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary group of scientists in a rigorous study of the body's natural defense systems in relation to disease prevention and maintaining lifelong health. Rank will be commensurate with accomplishments, with a primary faculty appointment in any of several departments within the BSD, and options for secondary appointments throughout the University of Chicago. The new institute will combine the advantages of a major academic medical center with expertise in venture creation and technology commercialization at the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation(https://polsky.uchicago.edu/page/about).

The director will articulate a vision for the Institute, oversee the recruitment of new faculty, and lead a comprehensive investigation of the interactions between the metagenome, immune system, and environment to further our understanding of basic biology, wellness, and disease. Mid-career and senior-level investigators with leadership skills and experience leading team efforts or building programs are especially encouraged to apply. Likewise, scientists or physician-scientists with industry experience, or experience in venture creation or industrial partnerships are encouraged to apply.

The Institute will be supported by state-of-the-art technology platforms including, but not limited to, gnotobiotics and mouse husbandry, specimen biorepository, microbial culturing, metabolomics, medicinal chemistry, sequencing, and single-cell genomics. Data generated across platforms will be assessed for quality and integrated via a sophisticated informatics infrastructure. Researchers at the University of Chicago are world leaders in the design of secure and compliant cloud-based architectures to facilitate standardization and analysis of large-scale data, and to maximize interpretation of data generated across facilities, academic institutes, and industry.

An Incubator/Accelerator facility will bring researchers together with experienced platform directors, clinicians, data analysts, and grant support staff to facilitate the evolution of experimental design tailored to the challenges of metagenome experiments, and to facilitate new collaborative projects and grant proposals. This facility includes expert staff from the Polsky Center who will connect the latest scientific findings with leaders in business, potential investors, and entrepreneurs.

Interested candidates must apply online by submitting a curriculum vitae and statement of research interests at the University of Chicago's Academic Career Opportunities website at http://tinyurl.com/UCDuchossoisFamilyCenter. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
