Position Information

Position Title Leading from Within Fellow Requisition Number STFR005124 Division/College School of Law Interdisciplinary Division/College Location Boston Main Campus Full-time/Part-time Full Time Grade 10 Posting Date 12/11/2018 Responsibilities

Northeastern University School of Law (NUSL) is creating a two-year fellowship within its Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration (the Center). Within the law school, the Fellow will work under the supervision of the Managing Director of the Center and closely with the Director of Employer Outreach-New Markets to develop curricular and extra-curricular offerings that will prepare law students and graduates to bring an ethos of public interest to all sectors of the economy in which students may find themselves pursuing their careers, with a special emphasis and focus on in-house counsel and those who work in the business world.

The Center is the coordinating hub of NUSL’s many, outstanding public interest activities reflecting NUSL’s ethos that the deepest purpose and justification of law is to serve social justice. NUSL has fourteen clinics, institutes, and special programs that bring a public interest focus to their mission and work, and NUSL’s broad-ranging curriculum is particularly strong in its emphasis on health law, legal innovation, and the ways law can assist or, conversely, disempower underrepresented and marginalized groups in society. A centerpiece of the curriculum is our unique, client-centered, first-year course on Legal Skills in Social Context. In addition, NUSL annually hosts world-class public interest attorneys to share their practices and experiences with our students. This includes the Daynard Distinguished Visiting Fellows, the Givelber Distinguished Public Interest Lecturers, and the Valerie Gordon Human Rights Lecturer, who is sponsored by the Program on Human Rights in the Global Economy. Currently, NUSL is engaged in a long-term project to link to and develop synergies with other disciplines, schools, and programs in the Northeastern University community that work on related issues.
The Center seeks a two-year Fellow to work with the Center Director, the Director of Employer Outreach-New Markets at NUSL and representatives of other schools and colleges, such as the D’Amore McKim School of Business, to: 1) perform a comprehensive review of NUSL’s curriculum and extra-curricular activities to ensure that the values of public interest are imbued in all aspects of our pedagogy and programs with the goal that our students will have the skills necessary to be leaders who employ a social justice lens in whichever organizations, institutions, and job-sites they enter during their professional careers; 2) develop an enhanced curriculum for JD students focusing on the goals and values of public interest in organizational and corporate competencies (e.g., in financial literacy, fair and just compensation, organizational and labor relations systems, organizational culture, data analytics, project management, legal operations); 3) create a Coaches in Residence program with a “Leading from Within” course/capstone project; and 4) identify emerging areas and methodologies of public interest law practice for the 21st century and assist NUSL and Northeastern University to identify new initiatives responding to the rapidly changing socio-political context nationally and internationally. The Fellow will utilize the work performed in 1 through 4 above to assist in planning and conducting a major conference for our students and the broader community (fall 2019) and will work with the presenters at that conference and the Faculty Director of the Center to publish and disseminate the findings.

Qualifications

The Fellow must have a J.D. and must have shown a devotion, in their professional and volunteer/pro-bono work, to the public interest. Preference will be given to someone who has demonstrated experience bringing public interest values into an in-house or business setting and who has two years or more of legal experience or who also has an MBA. Additional requirements include excellent written and oral communication skills, strong research skills, good people skills, and a commitment to democratic and collaborative work-methods. Other preferred skills are experience with drafting grant proposals, proficiency with social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook), experience with website development and maintenance, and blogging.
