General Summary

Holman Success Center's mission is to provide instruction and services that will support students in the development of skills necessary for effective performance and positive adjustment to the learning environment. Part time lecturers of the Holman Success Center contribute to this mission by serving in a variety of roles and capacities and performing duties that may include, but are not limited to:

  • UNIV Program Instructor
    • Participating in a two-week intensive UNIV instructor training in late August
    • Managing and supporting a diverse classroom of 25 first-time students including:
      • Preparing for and delivering standardized curriculum
      • Prompt grading and feedback for all assignments and projects
      • Proactive and prompt communication with students
      • Managing Course Shell on Canvas
      • Holding regular office hours
  • Working collaboratively with cohort of UNIV instructors, including:
    • Participating in regularly scheduled program meetings with all instructors
    • Collaborating weekly with small cluster group of fellow instructors
    • Success Coach
      • Tracking, monitoring, and reporting on the academic progress of students via letters, phone calls, and e-mail
      • Meeting with students who are experiencing academic difficulty
      • Meeting with students who are in good academic standing
      • Helping students to develop a personalized plan for academic success
      • Serving as a liaison with other campus offices to provide additional resources for students
      • Coordinating the referral of students to the HSC's tutors
    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    Teaching may include a number of particular obligations which employees are expected to fulfill, including but not limited to: meeting with students during and outside of assigned classes, assessing student work and performance, preparing syllabi and course materials, providing copies of syllabi and course materials to their supervisor on request, and assigning and submitting grades in accordance with established Eastern Michigan University schedules.

    Perform related departmental duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Required Skills:

    • A Master's Degree is in Educational Leadership, HESA, College Counseling, or equivalent is required for this position.
    • A sincere interest in working with undergraduate students experiencing academic challenges as well as success
    • A general knowledge of successful study strategies
    • Good organizational skills and basic computer skills
    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about campus resources
    • Ability to work well with staff in the HSC and across campus
    • Self-motivation and initiative to take on projects and tasks as necessary
    • Excellent communication skills

    Preferred Skills:
    • Knowledge of or training in student development issues
    • Prior experience in learning assistance
    • Experience in database management, word processing, Excel, and Access
